"~"imp _ —TheFresno State College CoWeolarr— Hey Day -Worth The Trouble Hey-Day—lost student tradition, number infinite. Hey Day is one of many traditions that have been lost to the student body, and one that—with variants —can be made into a good, thing and successfully brought back. The students have lost some traditions because of their own apathy—the functions died natural deaths. Most of the other lost traditional activities were d' continued because of the failure of the students meet their responsibilities as mature individuals should. This is why Hey Day was cut out. Excessive drinking and disorderliness brought too many plaints to the ears of the administration. Hey Day, for the benefit of the three undergraduate classes who know of it only by rumor, was an all- afternoon picnic for the entire student body, featuring food, drink and recreation at Roeding Park, held each spring. It degenerated into a mild drunken carousal of two or three hundred Greek-letter students before it was thrown off the social calendar. Student President Bob Coyle, who has delved a little into the possibility of bringing the event back and has explored ways of guaranteeing an event of high enough caliber to insure its continuance, has con with a good idea. He suggests an afternoon-evening barbecue at the college farm—swimming and other recreation in the afternoon; the aggies barbecuing a couple of beeves in the evening and all/students enjoying a barbecue dinner, with a program of campfire entertainment and group singing or the like to wind it up. He also suggests and perhaps with good rei that bringing such an affair to the campus is a job for the students themselves and that he, as student president, would be glad to help push the project in every way if a group of students would take it upon themselves to shoulder the responsibility. In a way, if s not hard to see why Hey Day degenerated. Fresno State is a "street-car college," with many students attending because of its proximity. This factor, plus that of a heavy percentage of veterans and married students, tends to work against a strong community spirit in the student body. The Greeks, to o large extent, carry it Coyle's idea, if well planned and carried out, would result in a large turnout and the development of more student "community" spirit — something FSC needs and something worth the effort to obtain. - Collegian Staff Mooting I Air Force Recruiters To ns^T^fv^,1iU>lcUpa.'Ynt Th. ■" "•»• N«X» W«»k PLAYDIUM » Von Nsrss — Ph. 4-5300 LEWIS & MILLER COLLEGIAN MAKE IT EASY ON YOURSELF $21,000 GRANT — FSC Scholarships Chairman Gordon K.
