—The Fresno State IedTti COMMENTS The Quota System The quota system used in the rushing procedure JjBanqin' I read Bob I the qnota ay of Fresno State College's sororities has been the subject of much recent antagonistic discussion. Not since the academic year began has there been a subject we have been urged to discuss editorially by so many people. We held off commenting upon it earlier because (l) I we found it hard to fully understand the attitudes of the persons directly affected (i.e., women) to this problem, and (2) if the system's faults outweigh its alleged advantages, the time to do something about it is now — not during the height of a rush season. At first this o^ota-umitation plan, which Coyli recently blasted, seemed ridiculous. If some sororities can't get enough members to keep going, why, they must have ceased to fill an important" function. Why not let them die? Then, upon closer elimination, the quota rule seemed to have some good features after alL Investigation brought us the knowledge that women, as a general rule, have a great deal more social self-consciousness than do men. They tend to rate their groups one, two, three. They sometimes let those ratings mean a lot to them. An objective of this rule is to bring about taad standardization of some type, at least in size, anc to split up the "top" girls into as many different groups as possihjfe. Well.. . this idea, if it works out, will take a lortf time to jelL In time sororities may come to be'regardet as some type of glorified service clubs, the grout prestige aspect may be diminished, and girls may "go sorority without worrying too much about which ont they're going. Our own idea is that birds of a feather are bound to flock together to an extent, even if only so many birds are allowed to a flock. However, it's true this quota system has succeedec to some degree in pushing some girls from sororities they wanted to join into others to which they can be of more value, and perhaps it will be increasingly so But the transition period, if such it is, is a painfu one; for the rule is now — we know for sure — keeping several independent girls, girls the sororities! would like to get, from pledging. Some have become so disgusted or upset over the whole affair they do not even sign up for rushing anymore. On the question of whether this trend continues or hot hangs the future of the quota system. If the rule and the trend continue the sororities gradually wil be pushed into a position of less social prominence Maybe this is a good thing. We once saw a motion picture about sororities entitled Take Care of My Little GirL Applied to Fresno State College, the picture of sorority life there presented is ridiculous. But friends who attend larger universities, particularly on campuses in the East, where prime importance is attached to Greek-letter life, report the situation comes close to home. Thai. many, many girls are hurt because of failure to get into certain, or any, sororities is for sure.
