I EDITORIAL . COMMENTS FSC library Serves College Well Today we offer a tip of The Collegian bat to a the most efficient and helpful and least appreciated departments of Fresno State College—the FSC li- brary. This institution, under Dr. Henry H. Madden, main- ' * sccellent services for the benefit of this school's f and students and affords them aa complete les for curricular research as it possibly under a limited budget MLb*k The library also offers many interesting and helpful little "extras", such as the attractive, informative and cultural displays in the circulation desk room, the browsing shelf containing recent drama and fiction, the recently instituted microfilm facilties that provide for research from microfilm records, etc The library's existence also provides many job opportunities for students. The librarians deserve a great deal of credit for the efficiency and courtesy continuously demonstrated on their jobs. Expected to be combination statisticians, walking information booths and bouncers, they sometimes have to put up with quite a bit of foolishness. Students are always taking up the librarians' time with questions the students would have known the answers to had they bothered to read the clear and easy-tc-understand instruction sheets furnished in the library. In the librarians' desire, successfully fulfilled, to provide adequately quiet and undisturbed facilities for students, they are continuously on the flert for disturbing elements, although the situation isn't quite so bad as that depicted in the adjoining toon, which suggested this editorial. Although these "watchdogs" of the quiet may be unpopular with some loquacious students who still make attempts, though sporadic, to change the library's function into that of a coed lounge, the librar- ts should be given a real vote of thanks from FSCs Cagers, With 4-8 Mark, \lnvade Southland Tonite The Battlin' Bulldog five invades the Southland this weekend to play game* with the highscoring Pasadena Nazarenes tonight, a weak Los Angeles State five tomorrow night, and a so-so San Diego quint Monday night Fresno State's chances in the LA State and San Diego Attend Basketball Game Next Week Last Saturday night at 10 o'clock we were optimistic mood, a good mood. Our spirits were high. We had just left the Roosevelt High School gymnasium. There, a few moments earlier, the Fresno State College basketball team had lost to the team from Santa Clara University, 74 to 67. Why were'we happy about a game that FSC lost' Not just because the Bulldogs, matched against i perienced sq rough, rugged, smooth-working, experk (that is considered among the top indepent the coast) fought tooth-and-nail right down to the endents i e and momentarily gave the Broncos a scare; but because the gymnasium, the largest in town, was literally jammed with fans — relatively few of whom were students, largely because of the holiday date, but most of them were paying customers. And — primarily — oecause the spirit and fight shown that night by the Bulldogs was of the type that, if maintained, will in itself serve to draw goodjy numbers of townspeople to the games, and the spirit shown by the audience waiof the type that means- quite a bit to the guys out~there on the floor and of the type that forebodes a carry-over to the next game. There was a good feeling in the air, pervading that to come through for that crowd, earnestly trying to deserve the generous support. It was a feeling strong enough to give a healthy boost to the outlooks of such optimists as ourselves. Visions of the new FSC gym being initiated this year with a series of well-filled houses and; hard-fought basketball games, visions of increased gate receipts and the hundred-and-one other beneficial "results to night—these all entered our mind. n Saturday its next home game. In homegame. They will play in FS(£s brand-new men's gymnasium, a home of their own/Jor the first-time. The first entrance into a new home is a good time, it seems to us, for the first vital sparlcof a new spirit to flash in the student section at the games, to continue what the team and the townspeople^! ready have begun to develop. It is our sincere hope that each student who reads this will, if at all possible, be among. those in the J rooting section at that game next-Friday night We can't help feeling that those who do go will, as they 'leave the game afterwards, know the.spirit we are speaking of here — and maybe have the nucleus of vision or two bouncing around in their own heads. jfThc BRIDES HouseflH 33 N.
