COMMENTS Here We Go Again The Collegian would like to start right out this year by extending a good old hearty welcome to every body—old students, new students, young students transfers, freshmen. Even faculty members ant sophomores. We're at the beginning of a new school year. It's a time that many editorial writers, tired of searching and scraping and researching for material for author itative dictums on any one of a wide range of campus topics, varying from fraternities to sororities, find ready-made for the free and easy creation of nostal gic literary lookings forward and back, and weeping in beer, and saving what a great new era we stanc at the threshhold of, what a critical period in history we are students in, and what a glorious future the old alma mater is heading into. The beginning and the end of anything often marks the time when editors and human beings stop walking the road long enough to climb a tree and look arounc to see where they're going and where they've been ... and maybe it's not such a bad idea, at that, to stop and take inventory . . . just like we all supposedly did three months ago. Fresno State is a pretty good school. Most every body here ought to have a good year this year, too A new and proven football coach, one whose teams have enjoyed 20 winning seasons of football, should mean a winning football team. A mandatory student body card, providing a solid estimated income on which to plan a budget, should mean an FSC Association that climbs out of debt—maybe this school year And a $20,000,000 campus in the making, on which work keeps plugging along in spite of strikes and shortages, should mean progress. Unlike student publications at most other schools The Collegian is almost entirely under the control of the students. The students dictate its policies. The students see that it gets published. The journalism is the students' journalism, and the newspaper sinks or swims—with the students. The Collegian's editorial welfare is the direct re sponsibility of an editor. Its financial welfare is undei the control of an advertising manager. Both are appointed by, responsible to, and subject to the policies established by, a board of publications, which in turn is responsible to the association and its board of di The Collegian, if it does a good job, will present a selection of art and copy that is important, new, in formative and interesting to the students. If The Collegian does a good job, it means the students wil be doing a good job, from the comparatively few stu dents who handle the material used, to the hundreds of group officials and private individuals who suppK that material. It's a cooperative effort, in the broad est sense, and one that needs the cooperation of every To be specific, we hope everyone who would like to report, write, take pictures, draw cartoons, edit, or play any other part on the staff will see us about do ing so. We hope anyone who knows of what he or she thinks is a story or picture or suggestion we coult use will contact us. We hope anyone who feels he or she has something to say to the rest of us will think of Bangin' On The Wall—our letters column. In other words, we want ev erybody to get on the bandwagon and join in the fun It's your paper. Use it.
