Gamblers followed the team from its home at Peoria III., to fix that contest. . The entire incident left a bad taste in the mouth of most sports <fana. Fixes on the football field have not been reached but some incidents that happend on the gridiron this fall showed that college sports need a good "cleaning up." The case of a Drake University halfback, leading ground gainer in the country, who was severely injured in the game with a strong Oklahoma AIM team has caused considerable discussion. The populace in Stillwater, Okla.. home of the Aggies, had heard rumors the star Drake halfback would not finish the game. How true these boasts were when pl.'yn with more brawn than brains smashed the opposition star's jaw on play one. Why? Not only because of his playing ability, but because he was a Negro. As a result of this "accident" two schools, Drake University and Bradley, have dropped out of the strong Missouri I Valley Conference." What did the conference due toward dis-l ciplinary action against the Oklahoma team? Nothing. I The only possible solution is de-emphasization of the sports programs of the nation's colleges. More severe pent ties to the real culprits, the low form of humans who lurk the dark corners of the gyms offering money to an who undoubtedly needs the financial help. Why all this fuss about the ways of college sports? Tol call for a uniform set of rules, get college athletics back ' clean clothes, and to enforce strict rules of eligibility. Now that Congress and nationally known jurists are taki an interest in the evils of big business — college style — is rime we ourselves reviewed the facts.
