Alumni President Pledges Support | Today we celebrate another notable milestone in the development of Fresno State College. ■> In Its 40 years of development this college has set up several such mileposts. Established as a Normal School m 1911, FSC achieved its first major goal with the creation of a four- year program of teacher education in 192L Fourteen years Inter the official name of the college was changed to Fresno State College, and authority was granted the institution to carry the various lines of college work leading to the Bachelor's Degree, with or without including the courses required for a teaching credential. A dozen years later, the scope of the college's service was still further expanded with the iT.-_tic.it of ;i Department of Agriculture and a Farm School located on a separate campus. And last year saw the addition of a graduate program leading to the Master's Degree. In those forty years of growth the enrolment of the college has shown a steady increase. This remarkable expansion in enrolment, facili- San Joaquin area is most important. However, the institution's orderly development and continuous expansion is the product of great vision. The founders of the college, and principally the late President Charles McLane, deserve commendation. McLane served the colic.? for sixtcn years, during its difficult days of infancy and early growth. President Prank Thomas administered the institution for over twen- any great forward steps To an extent greater than most citizens can possibly understand, the institution's forward development has been stimulated liy the College Advisory Board and the Fresno State College Foundation Board. A college is no strong- than its faculty. Here at Fresno State a large measure of credit for our favored position comes from the strong, devoted faculty group and from the fortunate relationships continually existing between administration and teaching staff. Today the Chamber of Commerce ■ cooperating in these groundbreaking ceremonies. Through- ut the history of the institution the Fresno City and County Chamber and other organized, groups of business and professional leaders have given strong support to our college. Forty years ago when our present campus was selected and the original buildings constructed, the locale was a mile beyond the city limits. The campus was a sandy vineyard. There was no public transportation. There were no paved streets. The college was "out in the sticks." There were, I am told, many skeptics who freely predicted that such a rash adventure was destined to doom. Some said the streets would never be paved-beyond Olive Avenue. Some predicted that the buildings could never be fully utilized. The venture, some said, (Comtimud on Pdfr 2) __*__ ________
