Could they be feeling a taste of competition from the newly- opened Wherehouse? We can only hope that this competitive atmosphere continues. Speaking of the Wherehouse, on my last visit there I decided to put out a cent (one penny) for a Vogues al- RECORDS bum. I figured for a penny even the Vogues were a bargain. But when I took the record out I found what I had was'Kenny Rogers and The First Edition's Greatest Hits." Not super but better than the Vogues. Sol bought another one, this time hoping for maybe a Van Morrison or better—but no such luck. Kind of like a grab bag. Speaking of grab bags, Todd Ruhdgren's "Todd" is out as a two-record set and is only partially successful. I'm afraid that his recent escapades as producer of Grand Funk have affected him (hopefully temporarily) musically- If you are expecting the mellow Rundgren music of his earlier albums then be prepared for a letdown with this one. Vocally he continues to mature with this effort and should overcome the oftentimes, critical comparisons of Ms style, phras- Ings and whisper-whines to Laura Nyro. Rundgren's lyrical ability remains his most prominent gift. You'll find a little hit of insanity In his humor as In "An Elpee's Worth of Toons"; "Who's that on the racks again? A portrait of a crazy man Trying to make a living off an LP's worth of toons A picture of. a soul in pain Trying to change the world with an LP's worth of toons There's something at the heart of U that's simply awful A man who makes ■ living off a plastic waffle." That single put Anne Murray hack Into the limelight. l-'roni "Love Siwiu'" came her two highest singles todate: "Love Song' and "Send a Little Love My Way." However there are Itetter cuts on this LP than those released as singles. She does an outstanding joi> with Hobby Hus- sel's "Backstreet I.ov.n'," Gary Osltorne's "Children <YMyM;iKJ," and the old COs hit, Musi One Look.' This jltiu.ii Is a conglomeration of different musical styles from ANNOUNCEMENT country to funk to bluesy-soul to Ihe 30s style of "Real Emotion" and "Send a Little Love My Way." Murray has a gutsy voice but site also has the sugar-sweet Karen Carpenter style which she Is cenerally known for. You Just may find her former voice style more to your liking. Though not a songwriter. Anne Murray'has chosen a tasteful set of tunes which seh sings rather convincingly. The Bulldogs of coach Bob >en- neet took both ends of a'double- header from the Cal State Hayward Pioneers 7-4 and 9-1. Thla was a comback of sorts for Fresno, since lt dropped the series opener Friday night 1-0 to the pioneers. So much for ihe old sport. The -new sport* came ln the form of three "streakere* that may make the twin bill an unforget- .ihle one. when the flrjti streaking male tan onto' the field, Fresno was Netters tie San Jose, beat Mills leading 4-0 ln the second game. That was In the top of the fourth Inning. Tbe Bulldogs, although Bennett was "the streaking was a little upsetting, lt breaks up your concentration,* laughed off the Incident and padded their lead with another runn In the bottom of the frame. The next pair of streakers came tumbling through the cen- terfleld gate, poayed tag momentarily and then exited through the same gate. Fresno, now 18-6 for the sea- ton, fell behind in the first game, spotting the Pioneers four runt. But as the Bulldogs have done all season long, they battled back. Highlighting the hitting for Fresno In the opener was left- fielder Mark Moore and relief catcher Dave Russell. Moore, a 6-1 sophomore, was two-for-four at the plate, Including a double. He scored twice. Russell, who came ln for starting catcher Mike Edmonds ln the sixth, came through with a single and a double with one RBI, showing the depth of the Bulldogs this season. Junior righthander Warren Brusstar picked up his third win of the season, going the distance against the now 7-9 Pioneers. Using mostly fastballs and curves, Brusstar stayed out ln front of the Hayward batters most of the way, striking out nine and scattering nine hits. The only frame.that Brusstar was tn real trouble was the Pioneer third, when be gave up four runs on a like number of hits. The Bulldogs wasted little time tn getting on the scoreboard In the second game. With two outs ln the first inning, third baseman Doug Elf singled, Moore.walked and both were driven In on a sharp single by designated hitter Bob Prleto. Prleto then crossed the piste on a 370-foot leftfleld homer by first baseman RonSle- bert. Fresno thinclads easily outdistance Cal Bakersfield, Pacific Vikings Elf exited from the game ln tbe fifth with two bits, Slebert was two-for-three, Including four RSI's, and shortstop Kenn Cunningham also had two bits. Starting pitcher Brad Kelly bad to leave tbe game ln tbe top of the fifth, when a recurring back Injury made lt Impossible . for htm.to continue. Relief see Mike Murphy came In to pick up bis third win of the season, against no losses. Fresno will travel to Sacramento State tomorrow for a two- game set, and then will rest before going to Moraga for a makeup doubleheader with St. Mary's. 3 NEWS FLASH!! TEfr DRIVE jj THE ALL NEW •J. ELECTRIC . MOTORCYCLE Being down 3-0 after the sln- iles matches against San Jose state did not bother the CSUF women's tennis team. They came hack ln the doubles to tie the Spartans 3-3, then moved on to lawn the Mills College team 6-0. The Bulldog women netters are now 3-0-1 on the season. The doubles wins against SJS *ere hard fought all the way. i a mllla Sutherland and Cora Jor- . ina got the Bulldogs moving with i 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory. Then Linda Veatch and Gall Rothsteln followed with a 6-4, .1-6, 7-5 win. Pam Matson and Holly Geile had tbe easiest time, winning 6-»L 6-4. The same doubles teams claimed wins against Mills College, at did Joan Avedetian. Marilyn Mitchell and Virginia Wun in singles. This weekend Fresno will host i four-way match with Sacramento, Chico and San .lose. Matches will begin at 9 a.m. When you have three point getters like the CSUF track and field team has, the outcome of a meet Is rarely In question. Doyle Nelms. Roger George and Mike Glroux are three names that will stick In the minds of Freano Pacific and Cal State Bakersfield ■ coaches for some time, y The dynamic threesome collected three firsts, six seconds, a third and a fourt, as Fresno State destroyed FP and CS Bakersfield ln a triangular meet at Ratcilffe Stadium. George, the CSUF decathlon star, placed second ln the long Jump (22-feet), second In the javelin (182-8), second ln the 120 high hurdles (15.1), third ln the pole vault (14-6), fourth In the high Jump (6-4) and ran the anchor for the mile relay. Nelms, part of the Bulldogs' strong welghtman duo, took first ln the discus (159-2) and second ln both the hammer (170)- and shot put (54-1 3/4). Glroux, already a record breaker this season, bettered his mark In the hammer, going from a 198-U--to a 202-2 even. Tbe distance in the hammer Is believed to be one of the best collegiate marks In the State this year. Coming away from the hammer, Glroux also took first tn the shot put with a 54-9 1/2 and a second In the discus with a toss of 140-2. . In downing Pacific 135-28, the Bulldogs of coach Dutch Warmerdam evened the books after the loss to the Vikings last season. Fresno took care of Bakersfield! In the three-way scoring 139- 30 1/2. Other winning marks by the Bulldogs included Lonnle Powell's 203 in the Javelin, Steve Campbell In the 440 (48.3), Pat Phelan ln the 3,000-meter BE SEEN IN THE DARK II AMAZING INVENTION!
