Q. Why Detroit as opposed to Los
Angeles, let's say?
A. Well, Los Angeles Is a little
eh . . . surface to me. Everything's on the surface, you
know. Eh . . . you got a current undercurrent that's really strange and I don't understand It. And I'd rather stay
where I understand It. In Detroit I understand they're klll-
ln' people like mad, but I understand that , . . t can see
that. But they got a different
way that they kill you In L.A.
And 1 don't want no part of that.
I'd rather stay on In the East
where I know what's happen-
J. Don't you have any hobbles or
anything?
t. Well, I like to golf, eh . . .

get  off I'm   tired,   and I try

the Fresno audience?
A. Yeah, I enjoyed the people.
They were nice, but I didn't
enjoy the microphones. I didn't
think they were too good.
Q. What do you feel about entertainers coming to certain
cities and not putting on a half
decent show?
A. I guess that's not really caring how you do, Just coming
and getting your money and
split. That's really not caring
about the people you're playing for. Bui I don't feel like
that. I feel your last show
always has to be your best
show. You should always try_

Q. What are your future plans ...
In   the  near   future,   that Is?
A. Well.eh . . . right now I don't
think my future is really up to
me at this point, you know. I
got management. My future at

me and then If maybe that's
not happening, I'll go back and
seek my own dreams, you

and I'll be there until something definite comes up. Right
now, I'm.about the most definite thing I know, right now.

A. No, I didn't get Invited. Also,
I was working, and I wouldn't
take off work to go to a wedding.

A. That's all I did - played for
benefits, didn't make no money
for about two yeara. (laugh)

A. Yea, but it's got tobe a worthy
cause, because a lot of the
benefits were nothing but rip-
offs. Giving a benefit here and
a benefit there and ripping oft
the money and putting it In
their pockets,' and I found out
about all this so they've got
to come up with a legitimate

The frustration stems from you
and thousands of other Black men
who foolishly believed vicious and
deatructlve propaganda burled
against Black women. Consequently, we were unjustly stereotyped as monsters, stalking the
earth, intending to de-ball the
precious ego of the Black man.
What you don't realize, my
love, la that Black girla are
trained from birth to be independent. That Independence la not
to castrate and humiliate you,
but to support ourselves and give
ua strength so that we can make
it   on   our   own,   If necessary.
We have been labeled stupid and
- not together, but we're Intelligent
. enough to realize Black men seem
to care nothing for our welfare.
But, even with these facts glaring In our faces, we seek the
positive tn Black men.
If a man la strong, he can appreciate a strong, independent
woman and nave a beautiful relationship, a weaker man will
criticize and detest his woman's
strength or Independence. Undoubtedly, he will crush her into

thinks of offering love, support
and security that the Black woman needs. If be did, he'd discover
that he possessed God's

me undesirable, think of why I
seem cold to you. I have no choice

defense for survival. Surely, you
can understand that if I didn't, I'd
crumble Into a pile of worthless
I expect someday the long-
awaited apology from my Black
brothers, who have humiliated
and degraded Black women for
centuries, only then will I be
able to love you wholly, without
your respect and admiration, I
only offer you a shallow love, he-
cause you have failed to make me
feel a complete woman. You've
made me detest myself, making
me think I wasn't good enough for
. you or any other man, and often
I believed you. So until you erase
the 'stigma' of being Black and
