"Cwo recent assassination attempts on President Ford have triggered cries once again for gun control legislation. It's 'nothing new. The nation heard the same cries after the ■ assassination of President John Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Sen. Robert Kennedy. Calls for gun legislation were also heard when an assassination attempt was made on presidential candidate George Wallace and when Sen. John Stennls was shot by a robber In the streets of Washington not far.from the Capitol Building. How many more national figures will have.to be killed or maimed before effective legislation to control guns Is passed? And more Importantly, how many more ordinary citizens will have to fall . victim to the gun before effective legislation'Is passed. What has kept congressional, legislation from becoming,law has been organized lobbying efforts such as that led by the National Rifle Association, who apparently feel that any measure of gun control would somehow compromise their favorite outdoor sport — hunting. The NRA watches over capttol hill from a $3.5 mllllpn glass and marble headquarters. It effectively keeps most congressional representatives and senators In line with boasts such as being able to hit the legislative body with half a million letters with 72 hours Why pick on the NRA and Its membership? Simply because there doesn't appear to be anyone else staunchly against gun control. The Gallup poll says that two out of three Americans favor firearms registration and that they have favored gun control for more, than three decades. Washington newsman Richard Stout points out Presidential commission after commission has recommended gun control. The President's Commission on Law Enforcement under former Atty. Gen. Katzenhach made Its report tn 1967. It recommended gun control. The National Advisory Commission onClvIl Disorder under former , Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner made Its report In 1968. It favored gun The list goes on to the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence report In 1969; The National Advisory Commission on Reform of Federal Criminal Laws report in 1970; and finally the Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals report In 1973. They all recommended gun control. Laws have been passed In some states, of course, Including the bill signed recently by Gov. Brown forcing a person to wait IS days after the purchase of a gun to pick It up. But it doesn't mean much when, a person can simply go across state lines to do his buying. The California law, and others like It are a"step In the right direction. But they are still a long way from effective legislation. What we need is national legislation outlawing the cheap and easy to get "Saturday night special* and registration of ail other guns. It's talk like this that gets those half-million letters_tnto production, however, for the NRA and its supporters' firepower Is in emotion and numbers, not logic. The prime argument seems to be that once congress ls allowed to outlaw "Saturday night specials" and register other guns, It will soon want to ban guns altogether. That sanie logic told us more than 50 years ago that banning prayer In public schools would lead to the banning of prayer everywhere else and finally the outlawing of religion. What we are talking about Is outlawing the cheap, pot metal and short barreled hand gun. The only animal lt illls Is man — there Is simply no other use for this close-range weapon. Where has gun control worked? Try New York City or England. Both have gun control. Of the ten largest cities In the United States, New York Is eighth on the scale of homicides, according to the New York Times. England has had gun control for more than 50 years, along wtth one of the lowest homicide rates in the world. Gun proponents argue New York remains at the lop of the list for violent crimes, which they contend are most often associated wfcto i. The fact ls that even though lt has the highest violent crime* rate It Is still eighth In homicides. The argument II for gun control than against It. Be sure to purchase bulbs that are plump, firm and free from damage and scars. Bulbs started right away will give you blooms by mid-February, bright cheery spots for your wlndowsill or study desk. For best root development be sure that the depth of the pot Is at least twice the height of the bulbs to be planted. Soak clay or porous pots overnight so that they will not draw moisture from the soil. Tom Snow, a four-piece group, will precede Ceclllo and Kapono. Ceclllo and Kapono are described in 'their promotional literature as "Hawaii's top recording group," and "contemporary rock artists." Tom Snow, according to a promotional pressrelease,"recordspolg- • nant and self-penned tunes." There will be shows at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Admission ls $2.50. Ceclllo and Kapono are being pald$500 plus 60 per cent of everything over 15 per cent gross; and Tom Snow is receiving a flat $300. College Union Program. Director Gary Bonglovaniil said the Showcase Cafe concept was developed over the summer, after the program committee decided to drop last semester's Hen Cackle Inn. Bonglovaniil said attendance was not what tt should have been at Hen Cackle Inn concerts, and he concluded from that •we were doing something wrong." Bongiovannl and the program committee have $2000 to spend on the Showcase Cafe, but he said he expects each program to make a profit.
