Wham she conies out, her bicycle is gone. Its lock cut and the bike stolen. Within tbe week the bike is locked to a tree at the UC Santa Cruz campus while Its new rider takes a test. This situation is not a rare one, according to Sgt. Mike Leedom of CSUF campus security. There Is actual substantiated proof where there have been bike rings where bicycles have been stolen from our campus and have been recovered on another campus," he said. 93 BIKES STOLEN From Jan. 1 through July 1, 1975, 93 bicycles were reported stolen on the CSUF campus. This Is 11 bicycles more than In 1974. The total cost of the bicycles stolen has been estimated at a Utile over $7,000 - an average of just over $86 per theft. Since the scho cycles have been stolen. "This It normal," Leedom said, "but that can cl Leedom says the time for stealing bicycles ls during spring when the weather U nice and more people are riding. He says the best thing students can do to help prevent a bicycle theft is to report anything suspicious. •You'd be surprised how many students see people walking around the bicycle racks with bolt critters and think nothing of it,* Leedom aald. HARD TO PREVENT According to Leedom, very few locks can prevent a determined bike thief. "Students would need to spend $20 to $25 on a lock and chain, and maybe that would prevent a theft."'. California has instituted a new computerised service using bicycle serial numbers to find stolen bikes. This service ls much like the one used for autos. Although the computer system Is helpful in recovering stolen bikes, there is a serious flaw. •Not too many students know the serial number of thetr bicycles,' Leedom said. •Bicycles are very difficult to recover If reports are made without the serial nuro- AS Senate approves funds
