But today La chlcana ls finding that she can doother things which are beneficial to her family and her culture. Some of the factors that are contributing to La Chlcana's way of thinking a ;s of tli equal opportunities for women. La Chlcana Is needed In the health professions because of two factors: (1) the lack of health professionals, and (2) the lack of women In the health field. By being a health professional (doctor, dentist, pharmacist, nurse, etc.) she will be able to cope better with the problems of La La Chlcana can also cope better with her own people (La Raza) because she speaks Spanish and understands their lifestyles and customs. Being a Chlcana, La Raza Is more apt to go to her for medical nelp or advice than to an anglo professional who speak their which her patients are more willing to confide In her. The Chlcana health professional tends to cope with problems of children more easily than a male profes-. slonal because she portrays i motherly Image whir-h puts ttie Thus the advantage of a Chlcana health professional Is that better care ls given to mothers and children. The Chlcana In a health profession acts as an Incentive to motivate other Chlcanas Into the health profession careers. She Is also an asset to her community In Itiat she can get Involved politically - another way she ls able to help La Raza. As a health professional La Chlcana is given the opportunity to sit on health professional boards that deal with new drugs and pedicles that pertain to women. She Is given the chance to express her feelings and professional judgment about these new drugs and policies. La Chlcana as a heftlth professional Is a much needed person to La Raza. She Is not only able to give her people better medical care but she is also abletoserve her people in a political aspect. By being a professional, she Is also an example to other Chl canas who want to m thing of themselves.
