I suppose I should be glad to no longer have association with the senate we now have on this campus; but, unfortunately, I feel we can have a good senate and that my leaving would also sever the Job I want to do for you and was elected to do. The senate changes Its mind all the time.- It took them three different meetings to decide on a budget and each one was radically different than the other. They like to blame this on the executive officers, but, unfortunately the knowledge should, and the voting power does, come from them. The appointments of myself to legislative vice-president and David Nlkssarian to College Union vice-president were made by Steve Moe, past president, with consultation with David Price, current president. When the senate confirmed these In July they knew the Dean of Student Affairs' office and the Chancellor's Office attorney had determined the appointments were legal but now they disclaim both sources and have decided to determine legal action themselves. This action and the way they presented tt ts unfair to the student body and to all parties involved. To list my points: First, they' cite that the new bylaws say that appointees must be senators, giving each of them an opportunity to apply. When the bylaws say "when an officer... or officer-elect falls to assume office," they contend, it means that the officer-elect has to take office before he can assume his duties. Then why would the bylaws even mention the officer-elect? It would Just say, ."when an officer falls to assume office...'' leavtng the offlcer-electfout of the bylaws and irreplaceahle until he became an officer. As they cite the new bylaws, they Ignore that the appointment, made by Moe In June, was made according to the old bylaws as a guide and further Ignore that the Associated Students was and Is not a recognized entity and was and has no bylaws or constitution as of June 23, prior to appointments being made. The senate knew this when they ronfirmed the appointments anddldsowlth full recognition of Moe's rationale and decision. Further, to interpret the constitution and bylaws, of which the new one Is pending confirmation by the Chancellor's Office, and to determine the legalise of appointments In which the senate stands to gain by possibly being appointed to vacancies they manufacture, must be up to an unbiased body, the Student Court. Dave Davenport, author of the motion to "oust" us, said he wanted to give "senators a chance to change their decision" on confirmation before waiting for a full court to be formed. I ask, what ls their hurry, are they afraid of the court's decision? It will be selected before the end of the month. The senate went on to not only "oust* us from our appointed offices hut from the positions we held prior to them because "they made a mistake in their appointments." We get penalized because of their •mistake" and consequently I also lote my position the student body elected me to and Nlkssarian can't run for the senate seat he petitioned for. Since when does the senate have the rlght'fo remove from office a person the student body elected or to remove a petitioner for olflceM To .ill this 1 thank God sincerely that all the senators are not lost In these unfair endeavors. Withtheselunite to change these wrongs. To thp student body 1 say: Ilevoml everything, watch what your senators are doing, they need your guidance to realize the reality of accomplishing good for you and working on projects and committees foWour good. The obvious answer ls the rorrect one — the Battlin Bulldog Marching Band director. He ls Dale Anderson, 33, who is lining In this year while the regular director, Lawrence Sutherland, Is on leave. Anderson li reeled what he said was considered one of the finest bands in the valley the past six years — ihe Monache High Marching Band in Portervllle. DIFFERENT "A football marching band Is a afferent kind of musical organ!- .■-ition." he said. "The main em- phasli Isn't on the quality of the n uslc but on entertainment." He said the Ideas for shows :ne with experience. It takes a M of calculations because the nidations have to be worked :'. on a chart, mimeographed and ..uded out so the band members know where they are supposed lo. he explained. PRESSURE When asked If there ls a lot of pressure to come up with a new stow every week, Anderson said, "I've been doing this so long I lont worry' about the pressure ai.vmore. You have to handle pressure every day no matter what you're doing.* The band needs more members and Anderson urges students who >re interested In playing to sign up for Music 25, the marching band.
