The dancers Eva Amador, Roberta Geninl, Cristina Leon and Adrians Sanchez took the dance floor. They waited to be reactivated Into dance by Amparo. They stood in tbelr Spanish gypsy dresses, tightat the waist and then biUowlng with colorful folds to their ankles. Some bad red roses ln their hair, one propped into a bun, resting madrid-style on the top of her head. Serrano's fingers struck the strings of his guitar, and flamenco music filled the room. He played musical Svengali to the girls, who under tbe speU oi his music, danced their intrinsic and elaborate dances. The girls were joined by male dancers, Moreno and Nemeslo Pa redes, who added a rr tooch to the performance. They ran through the Zapa- teoaido, tbe Bulerias, the Far- ruca and the Fandango, some of the dances to be featured during tbe performance. . Amparo. took a break from tbe frantic pace of the rehearsals to talk about tbe performance. It will Include a short Spanish-dance ballet by Lenor Cohen Ross, who has written children's bible stories and a biblical book on anthropology, Amparo explained. "Sbe has been a friend of mine for several years," Amparo said of Ross. "If I told ber we were performing the ballet, it Is not beyond ber to grab a plane and go there." She said the storyline of tbe ballet and dances are not as important as the mood set by the guitar. ."The emotions of tbe guitar," she said, "creates the mood for what happens on the stage, for what develops." At this, sbe turned the attention to Serrano. He has toured Europe and South America to wide critical acclalm.andbas many records on the RCA label. He last performed in Fresno ln 1970. Serrano, In Ms thick Castillian accent, proudly said be performed for John F.' Kennedy Just months before his assaslnatton. He added that be received a personal letter of thanks from tbe then first lady, Jackie Kennedy, commending his performance. Both Serrano and Amparo returned to the rigors of rehearsal, activating the dancers into action. Tbe beauty of music and dance filled tbe Uttle room once again. Tbe performance is a benefit for the California Shakespearean Festival and Performing Arts Center.
