The DaUy CoUeglan Guest Editorial 'Let's call it Fresno State, by golly!' BY WLGORE TROUT Staff contributor A move Is underway to rename California State University, Fresno. The move began quietly, then escalated, In the campus bathrooms. • A grafflttl ww has since raged Ln two of tbem, located In the Ed-Psych Bldg. and in the main cafeteria, over the proper name for this esteemed institution. Everything from Fresno Straight College to College of the Raisins has been suggested, but the name that seems to be winning out is Fresno State University. Despite Journalism department Chairman Art Margosian's contention that FSU sounds obscene, I Uke it. The Fresno Bee, the Fresno Guide,, the Clovis Independents-id nearly every other off-campus newspaper, localradlo and television stations and even the college's own Office Of Sports Information have been calling CSUF by tbe name, FSU, for the past several years. Only Insight, The Daily CoUeglan and a few steadfast sticklers for "accuracy" have clung to the name foisted upon the college by the CSUC Trustees. WeU, It's time we Joined the rest of the community and stepped forward Into the past. Let's get rid of that hideous overly-long nomenclature aca- demia is shoving down the throats of The People! Lefs dump the name, CSUF, and become FSU. WeU, actually, this really Isn't a step Into the past—because, in' tbe past, we were caUed Fresno State CoUege, or FSC. Somebody got the idea this was a good school and it should be upgraded in status; so the "CoUege" became a "University." Maybe we could Invite an accreditation team to visit us again, to see if they could demote us? Seriously, feUow Americans, lfs time we' got on the stick, off our seats and tossed tbe baby out with the bath water! The thing is...as concerned as we are about these problems, and others, at PG&E we don't think "concern" is enough. The concern has to motivate action. And that's what we're coming to grips with. Here-and-now, how-to realities. So, if you're a "how-to" person, a person who's more than an idealistic abstractionist, there may be an opportunity for you with us to work toward solutions to problems that concern yoo. Sure, we've got the establishment benefits that make life a little easier to cope with, like good pay and employee benefits. But we've also got the things that make life worth living. Realistic challenges. If you're a graduating civil; electrical or mechanical engineer, and you've never thought about working for (and/or with) us before, give us a thought.
