It is called child abase and It is a major childhood disease in this country, according to Jerome Leavltte, CSUF school of education professor. "More lids nnder age 5 are killed by tbelr caretakers than by any disease or coD-binat-or-s of diseases", said Leavltt , the eoord___tor of the Central California Child Abuse Project Child abase encompasses much more than what is commonly thought of as tbe physical part of child abase. Leavltt said children, aged from 1 to 18, suffer from sexual andpsyebologic-- abuse as well as neglect. Neglect is when a parent Is not giving children the means to survive. It Is when a parent is really "detrimental to the health and life of the child", be explained. Reported sexual abuse has also Increased, he said, with more toys than ever before reporting the abuse. But what ties in W.th these and Is probably tbe most prevalent and probably the most harmful is the psychological abuse, said the author of one of tta first coltogete-ibooks on ehlld abase. This abuse Is "very hard to get a handle on," Leavltt said, because tbe damage can be very subtle. For this reason most facilities are not prepared to deal with this kind of abase. A trained teacher may be able to tell if a chUd has been physically abused Just by looking, but most symptoms are not very definitive, he said. Sometimes, be said, a teacher may be able to have some Indications of abuse by certain behaviors a child exhibits or by the child simply asking for some kind of help out ol his sltuaUoo. The actual removal of a child from the home Is a very extreme measure and would be detrimental to the child In most cases of child abuse, be said. This Is because "for tbe most part these parents love their kids and In practically aU the cases, with some exceptions, the kids love their parents," be explainer-. The best solution to child abuse is to educate the potential parents In the art of good parenting, he said. The alarming tact is that about 80 percent of adults who abuse their children were themselves abused as children, Leavltt. en-pbasiied, AH violent inmates in San Quentln were shown to have been "severly physically abused between the ages 1-10," he added. What child abusers seem to Inherit from their parents Is the wrong approach to disciplinary p-w*-nre.
