No thinking newspaper¬ man will say the profession is lily-white —but by that same token every news¬ paperman will defend the great good done by the press. Last semester, it was our privilege to hear the professors of criminology at Fresno State expound their theories on a multitude of things. Chief among these things was their condemnation of the American press. Far be it from us to advocate the cur¬ tailment of freedom of speech. But to our way of thinking, a professor who is charged with teaching impressionable college students should be fair enough to show both sides of every question. We repeatedly heard, last semester, the crim teachers tell students in Crim H2 how much of an ogre the press is. In defense of our chosen profession. s»e have this to say: Taken man for man, from the best metropolitan editors down to the young¬ est cub reporters—we'll stack the men of the press against the men of the law- enforcement agencies any day of the week. And it's our contention the intel¬ ligence of the press side will be far out¬ weigh the intelligence of the men in blue!
