■COLUGiAN DLJou,m - The Fresno State College Collegior 3r NatiotulAthertJsirigSerrice.lnc. fi ■ •„..-; Editorial ADVICE WANTED VChat-s the deal on advisers? This question was indirectly re-raised by students in connection with pre-regjstration, concluded just before the Christmas vacation. Some students, first of all, say they arc satisfied and have ample advice on their programs. Many students, however, are dis¬ satisfied and say that whereas some advisers have 100 advisees, others have only two or three students to advise. Many claim their advisers arc too hard to see and that, when nade. the advil - has t( little time scheduled to give adequate advice. A few students have complained they don't know what "adviser" means, hinting that the faculty members to whom they are assigned arc more nearly dictators and effectively re¬ move any choice by the student in sched¬ uling "electives." Whether or not these complaints are justi¬ fied, they represent student opinion and are worthy of investigating. And here are some By BILL MACE Recently I spent an hour watching a Mari Montez jungle picture. While still under the influence of this opiate, I went home and ' wrote a film scenario. The name of this pro¬ duction is, "Kiss the Belgian Off My Congo'" or "Mozambique, Madagascar and You." The picture opens as Kenya Kolony (Maria Mtmtiv.) is doing a trilial dance in the village square. She is accompanied by the weird of native reed instruments and a 300 piece i hestra hidden behind a clui— ~* jungle ferns. h As her dance comes to a climax, Lester Transit, an American engineer, played by Nigel Bruce, enters on the shoulders of i Rhodesian pigmy (Barry Fitzgerald). Kenya is instantly attracted to the dash¬ ing figure of Transit but before she can fling herself into his .inns and end the picture, a tribe of frenzied extras sweep thru the town, crying their ancient African war chant, "Urk" which, when translated means, "Yon can' end the Masted picture here, we haven't been Kenya is carried away by the savages and brought before the mysterious tribal chief. Kenya deduces he is not a native because of his strange manners, his size and the car¬ nation in the lapel of his tuxedo. The chief is instantly taken by Kenya's beauty but before he can remove his mask and declare his love. U'.-ter Transit rides in¬ to ramp-on the shoulders of the f pygmy, played by Mickey Rooney. (NOTE: Harry I-'it.-gerald read the scenario and de¬ cided Bing Crosby was calling him). The pigmy raises Transit's hand and the hero points 111-, linger" at the masked chief. In a voice quivering with emotion he says, "Kenya, that man is . . . " at this point a husky native claps his hand over Transit's big mouth and he is hauled away to the burn¬ ing stake. Kenya must now make her choice. Burn with Lester Transit or marry the mask- etl chieftain. The picture closes as Kenya fondles Lest¬ er's ashes, and the chief, who is in reality the exiled King of Greece (Roddy McDowell) dies of African coryza. That leaves Kenya Kolony, the Rhodes¬ ian pigmy and 2,000 un-paid extras. Kenya marries the pigmy, and becomes Mrs. Rho¬ desian, the 2.000 extras form a republic and borrow $12,000,000 from the U.S. and so what if it does stink? It's in technicolor- it doesn't have to be good. Some faculty advisers hav of work. Consider, for a myt the head of a large departmen ing 12 units and who series o three faculty i. How can that adviser be expect¬ ed to advise ADEQUATELY 40 or 50 or 70 students? And then there are the students who won't take advice when they can get it. Last year 10 per cent of the student body answered the question, "How many times between Sep¬ tember and April did you confer with your adviser?" Thirty-eight per cent of the stu¬ dents questioned said they hadn't conferred The question, however, did not leave room for the students to qualify their answers by the possible statement that they had TRIED to see their advisers but had not been able to do so. At any rate, 62 per cent of the students had teen their advisers. Lists in the office of the dean of students back up some of the complaints of students. These lists show that distribution of students among advisers is terrifically unequal. It's a fair guess that this situation exists chiefly because some department heads prefer to do all the advising within their departments. This is satisfactory only if such advisers have adequate time to devote to advising, and they do not in some cases. One function of the office of the dean of students is to coordinate and act as a central point for all advising. This office, working with the departments, has succeeded in dis¬ solving the problem in a few departments and in reducing it in others. But in some depart¬ ments the problem—and it is a problem to students—still exists. Whether it exists because of unintended lack of cooperation, mere indifference, or opposition to change, increased cooperation with the dean of students' office would prob¬ ably remove inadequate advising. It certainly would improve the quality and the results of advising for those students who want and need it.
