This Is arduous work, but It's only a tune-up for the coming decathlon season which begins late next month. Training It strenuous and usu¬ ally means two workouts a day during the off season. Practicing each of the 10 events, lifting velghts, and lota of running make ip the schedule that keeps the toclal science major busy and tlso works up his appetite. This keeps his number one fan, his vlfe, occupied about dinnertime. «V.f* wifo Is really great. She. Is awlays encouraging me and preparing my meals on topof her busy schedule (she Is a regis¬ tered nurse)." will Include the usual Mt. San Antonio Relays, the nationals, and one yet to be announced. In ad¬ dition John hopes to qualify for t trip abroad with the track team that will represent the U.S. this summer. Last year Warkentln trained and competed in Germany along with Bill Toomey, Olympic gold medalist. The B ulldog Iron-man took second in last weekend's Mt. San Antonio Relays decathlon event, scoring 7,255 points to winner Rick Sloan's 7,615. Toomey was leading the contest going into the ninth event but retired so he would not aggravate a pulled hamstring muscle. His progression In the last four years has been stead . . . even outstanding- In bis first de¬ cathlon he scored 6,143 points. This Is in marked contrast tohls latest and best performance of 7,370 points. John's best marks In decathlon events Include 11.2 in the 100 meters; 22-9 1/2 in the long Jump, 44-5 in the shot put, 6-feet in the high Jump, 48.6 In the 400 meters, 14.7 In the high hurdles, 146-6 in the discus, 13 feet In the pole vault, 197-llln the Jave¬ lin, a I 4:31.4 In 1,500 IT: tars. John's character'sets a good example on the FSC track team and his modesty is the source oT the respect he receives from his teammates. Although he Is graduating In June he plans to compete unattached four more years. *I want to compete in the 1972 Olympics to be held In Munich, Germany.* If dedication Is a factor John Warkentln is on his way! jumps soars throws and at day's end ..
