THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Monday September 23, 1968 t A TIME TO KEEP* Shuck in' and jivin' ERIC W. GILLIAM l It you start with the essential premise, as I do, that anyone that Reagan, Rafferty and our own Hugh Burns dislikes cannot be all bad - and probably Is a good fellow - then it naturally follows that Eldrldge Cleaver will be a constructive addlUoo to UC's list of lec- As you know, there Is now a great storm over Mr. Cleaver's ap¬ point to occasionally give lectures during a course on American Racism at the University. What has the peepul's 'leaders* so riled Is Cleaver's expUclt statement on racial relationships which. If the pubUc prints are to be trusted, consist of the phrase «KI11 Whlteyl" Cleaver gave a talk to the Barrister's Club In San Franclaso re¬ cently and, for the benefit of Ws white and "liberal* audience, he made the predictable number of spear-shaklng statements that promptly congealed his Usteners' marrow. This Is what they had come to hear, of course, since small-1 liberals love to be whipped and chivvied by underdogs. Like the nagellants of old, they feel that un¬ less they are made to bleed on occasion, the burden of fancied guilt becomes overmuch. The superego must be fed, right? Eldrldge Is hip to this and he obligingly kicked the enraptured crowd square in their corpus Juris secunda. They squealed on cue when he unleashed these nuggets: Cleaver on American lawyers: 'You're all chasing dollars, but there are other people who are chasing dollars to buy guns to kill Judges, and police and corporation lawyers.* Cleaver on liberals: 'I mean all my Insults to those who won't choose my side, the right side. . . You people on my side - I love you! ... I hope you'll take your guns and shoot judges and police.* Cleaver on courtroom sportsmanship: "We need lawyers today who have a lawbook In one hand and a gun In the other. . . so that If he goes to court and that -- - doesn't come out right, he can pull out his gun and start shooting!* "Clear and present danger" __ Aside from the suspicion I feel that he was shucktn' and jlvln' the honkjes here, Cleaver has only a contextual right to make such statements. Were he to say these things to an Impassioned mob where there was reason for an ordinarily prudent man to conclude that a clear, and present danger of violence would result from such statements then the protection of the first amendment would not ap¬ ply. Free speech, as the Supreme Court has pointed out, stops short LETTERS TO THE EDITOR of anyone's right to shout "fire* In a Important, too, Is to look at Cleaver as a man of keener percep¬ tions than his enemies would admit. Whether this will satisfy the thousands who start classes today at the university Is unknown. Most are by now aware that this skirmish between the Reagan Administration, the trustees and the school officials concerns Mr. Cleaver only marginally.
