The DaUy CoUegian 'Dog Diamond Team Will Open Season With UCLA Friday, February 18.1968 The Fresno State CoUege base- ball team wUl open their 1986 basebaU season today to their new park to toe first of a three-game series with toe University of Cal¬ ifornia at Los Angeles. The game, which wUl start at 2:30 p.m., will feature Lewis Stephen aa toe starting pitcher tor toe Bulldogs. The Bulldogs and Bruins will play a doublefaeader tomorrow. The Initial game will begin at 12:30 p.m. Stephen, a righthander, had a record of tour wins and two losses for Fresno last year. His earn allowed 30 runs, had 42 base on balls, and was tagged tor 47 hits. Other pitchers who may see some action are Doug Modrell, Dennis Ptiatl and Roger Bottger. Depending on the situation, the ir of left Bruins wUl use, Beiden know whether Modrell w lewUlbeBelden'a U he does not, number one relief pitcher. Modrell had toe most Impres¬ sive record of any pitcher tor the BuUdogs last year. Used mainly as a relief pitcher, Modrell com¬ piled a 5-1 record to 13 games. He allowed only 11 earned runs In SI Innings tor a 1.94 ERA. Described by Beiden as a curve ball pitcher with good control, Modrell walked 11 men and whif¬ fed 38 batters. Wayne McGhee, starting catch¬ er on last year's team, may not be able to play against toe Bruins because of a twisted ankle. WhUe practicing toe 'hot box* drill, McGhee slipped and hurt his ankle. However, he says toe ankle felt good Wednesday and hopes to play tomorrow. Buzz Nltschke, who played on the freshman squad last year, win get the starting call. Beiden also has not decided who he will start Jeff Ring and BUI Watson are trying to land toe top spot to centerfleld. Ring has not been working out part of this week be¬ cause of toe Uu, but Beiden U still high on him. Beiden describes Ring aa a quick fielder and a good hitter. Ring batted .32S tor FCC last Watson, who waa toe first play¬ er to hit a home run to the new Rounding out the infield are Don Pollard, first base, and Dar¬ win Frey, shortstop. Frey batted .293, but his field¬ ing average was .919. Starting at left field will bo AI Suckut, who batted .1881astyear. Buddy Vlckers, a sophomore, wUl get toe Job at rightfleld. UCLA, which is 2-1, got an ear¬ lier atari than the BuUdogs. They have defeated toe Phillies Minors, 5-3, and the MUler's Playtlmers, 10-3. One common ele¬ ment between toe two teams la that they were defeated by three Oregon teams two weeks ago. There Is one big difference to the teams. Fresno has had more Injuries and Illnesses this season than any other team In the con¬ ference. Steve Greene Is out be¬ cause ofabroken hand, BUI Bern¬ stein was out for three-fourths of the season with mononucleosis, and Jim Norsworthy was out tor a month because of an Injured rib. Various Illnesses have side¬ lined many of the wrestlers at one time or another. The Injury list has also caused FSC coach Dick Francis to either forfeit the 177- pound weight division match or put In a wresUer who has only been wrestling for only a week, In the Cal Poly match. The match could make Francis' dreams come true. Ever since they lost to Cal Poly last year, Francis stated earlier this sea¬ son, 'It would be nice to meet the Mustangs again for the champion¬ ship so we could have another chance to beat them.* Although the team Is missing Greene and Bernstein, Francis believes his smaU group could defeat the Mustangs. •It Is going to be a tough bat¬ tle. I think we could win at least five of these matches and the other three or four wrestlers could hold their own.* The five wrestlers Francis wUl be depending on are Steve Johanson, at 123; Jim Norworthy, at 130; Mike GaUego, at 137; Eric Chrlstenson, at 167; and Dick Blrbeck, heavyweight. An Interesting match wlU be Johanscn against John Garcia. Last year Garcia defeated Jo- hansen In their battle. Johansen has a 11-1.1. Francis feels that Johansen Is better prepared this year than he had been all last year. This Is Johansen was the leglate Athletic champion at 113. Bernstein wUl be back Into toe lineup when the conference tourn¬ ament begins on Feb. 26. He was given the green sign to wresUe again two weeks ago. However, he blossomed to over 200 pounds while getting over his Illness. Bernstein, wnowresUedatl77, will not wresUe against Cal Poly. Francis does not want Bernstein to lose 20 pounds because lt may harm his health. Bernstein wUl be wresUlng at 191 In the con¬ ference tourney. Other BuUdogs to wrestle In tonight's match are Mike Check¬ offs, at 137; Chris Jensen, at 145; and Steve Krislak, at 160. Even with a loss U would take a complete disaster (ai least at this point) to unseat toe California CoUeglate Athletic Association tltllsts. First of all, tho BuUdogs have to win only one of their remaining Fresno State, currenUy 16-8, have not had too much trouble winning basketbaU games this year, except to San Diego. The Bulldogs first three losses were at toe hands of university division teams, but U seems aa though In San Diego lt doesn't Secondly, even with three losses toe pressure would still 1 San Diego to win Its last tour conference games. The Gregorymen have great reason to want By winning toe league, the TDoga will automatically gain a berth to toe National CoUeglate Athletic Assoclatlon (coUege division) District Eight Regionals. More important, acting athletic director Hal Beatty announced Monday that his office waa notified by District Eight representative Don Perkins that U toe Bulldogs took the CCAA, Fresno State would be tho host school tor the playoffs, with toe winner representing toe District to the NCAA coUege division finals to EvansvUle, Indiana. Fresno Is no stranger to NCAA play, having represented the CCAA the past tour years to district play while going back to EvansvUle to 1963 (only to lose to South Dakota a finalist). The Bulldogs were nipped by toe Seattle Pacific Falcons last year on toe Northwest school's hardwoods. At tots writing, I couldn't or at least nobody would disclose who would fill toe other three berths.
