IN MEMDRIAM COLLEGIAN — SUMMER SESSION His days were filled with a myriad of duties as a guiding administrator of the Fresno State College Association, the FSC Foundation and the FSC Agricultural Foundation. Hov ever, he was never too busy to listen to individuals and their problems. His office door was always open. To thousands of Fresno Staters, he was friend. Fresno State College and Art Safstrom were synonymous. The College was his life. He was truly a pioneer f history of FSC. He first came to FSC in 1928 as a student. He immediately became interested and active in campus affairs. In his se year, he was elected student president, the first non-org to obtain the position at FSC. The day after he graduated in June, 1932, Safstrom be¬ came the first, and to this time the only, graduate manager for the CoUege. He built what has become a model college student organi He was the confidant of Dr. Arnold E. Joyal, FSC presi¬ dent, and Dr. Frank W. Thomas, president emeritus. He also served as liaison officer for both to the FSC Alumni. With all his varied interests on the campus during recent years, his greatest interest was in his own baby, the elation. For 29 years, he stood fast and battled for student control of their Association. His only criteria for the judgment of any Association activity was "is this what the students want?" He always had faith in student thinking and always contended that if the students were given full responsibility, they won and ti r leaders respected and fol- lowed his counsel His contributions to FSC athletics wer e many. He was a follower of the teams. His greatest help came in his insis- tence for an "even keel" athletic program at the College. As a result today FSC's athletic program has as solid a financial foundation as that of any college in the nat His love for Fresno Stale and its students was returned. He was respected by all on the Campus, ven by those that didn't always agree with him. He was chosen Alumnus of the? Year in 1960. In 1957, the students of FSC presented Safstrom with plaque "in appro- ciation of 25 years of loyalty and service t He also had time for community service the FSC Associa- He gave much of his valuable time to the Red Cross and to the Tuberculosis Association. He also was active in ninny service clubs during He was a brilliant humor. He was an authority on California history, especially of the San Joaquin Valley and the Pacheco area.
