University For Friendship
Ever since the United States has become increasingly dis-|
illusioned about the Castro regime in Cuba, this country has
attempted many methods of protecting its interests in that
Carribean isle.
Very little effort, however, has been expended in seeking
out the causes which have let Cuba drift to communism. And
even smaller effort has been expended in trying to keep tht
friendship of Latin America and winning back the trust ol
the Cuban people.
Unless we take vigorous and imaginative steps immed¬
iately the United States could conceivably find itself isolated
in its own hemisphere.
The image of the "Colossus of the North" is still very
much alive in Latin America.
Thc most practical  idea yet  proposed  to blot out
thoughts of "Yankee imperialism" in South America has
come from the desk of Drew Pearson.
In his nationally syndicated column. Pearson proposed
establishment of a "Free University of Cuba" to be located
on American soil, preferably Florida. This university would
serve Latin American as well as North American students
interested in South America.
Such a university. Pearson suggested, could be staffed by
numerous Cuban professors in exile who are working
Miami bellhops and waiters.
Pearson's proposal has reached the level of Congress where
it has been introduced as a resolution in both houses.
Certainly such a university can become a great tool for
increasing inter-American understanding and cooperation.
It deserves careful and non-partisan consideration by o
legislators before it can become a reality.

The annual meeting of the American Philological Institute,
held last week at Eastern Reserve University, wss enlivened
by the reading of two divergent monographs concerning the
origins ol early Gothje "runes," aa letters of primitive alphabets
Dr. Tristram Lathrop Spleen, famed lax and wide as the dis¬
coverer of the High German Consonant Shift, read a paper in
which he traced the origins ol the Old Weodish rune ' pt
I "bants") to the middle Lettic rune "gr" IF0-
1 "albert"). On the other hand. Dr. Richard Cummer-
Vonkey, who, as the whole world knows, translated
'ajama Game" into Middle High B.ctran, contended

finally asked Dr. Spleen if he would like to step into the gym¬
nasium and put on the gloves. Dr. Spleen sccepled the chal¬
