Iron Curtain Moves Off Shore
«Jt is even more apparent now after his two week visit to
the United States that Fidel Castro has led Cuba farther
down the path of the Hammer and Sickle than many people
had realized.
While confined to Manhattan during the current United
Nations General Assembly, Castro consistently mimiced and
trotted along with the rotund figure of Nikita Khrushchecv.
During  the course  of  the  General   Assembly  Meeting,
Cuba became the first nation in the Western Hemisphere
recognize Communist China. This move clearly indicated t
drift of Cuban politics, and, when recognition of Nationalist
China was withdrawn, this slide toward the Eastern Camp
was further pronounced.
At the same time, Cuba's Defense Ministry' announced the
first shipment of Russian built MIG jet fighters and heavy
-inks had arrived on the island. Within days United States
Navy transport planes reported being buzzed by Cuban jets.
Only last Thursday officials of the Castro regime refuse-
to accept a protest by the United States Ambassador ques¬
tioning the seizure of American owned banks.
All is not quite calm for the bearded Cuban leader on his
little island paradise. Anti-Castro forces are still operating
out of the Sierra Madre Mountains of Oriente Province, the
very Place where the current government begnn its drive
to unseat the Batista regime.
Nevertheless, the Iron Curtain is no longer thousands of
miles from thc United States. It has gained a foundation 90
miles off the coast of Florida. The threat of communist domi¬
nation may soon bo hours away by submarine, minutes by
jet aircraft and but seconds by guided missile.
