And his last motion was a "quivering" all over his body. And so the description goes. The description that was needed and waited for by those who cried so long for Caryl Chessman's death. We can almost — but not quite — visual¬ ize the pleasure some persons must get from reading description. What interests us is the realization that the twisting, "quivering" animal sitting in the chair was a human. His mind works: He thinks, lie can feel that lie is being strapped in a chair and he can understand that death has begun. What could be a more fitting climax for 12 years of fight¬ ing for life. Being strapped in a death chamber with SO witnesses — "14 in an official capacity." the reports say — certainly tops the struggle which the "convicted sex terror¬ ist" went through. Vengeance was once a standard philosophy in certain so¬ cieties and when we read the morbid description of Chessr man's death wc aren't sure it ever stopped licing a public ideal. The agonizing moments of his death scene, it seems to us, could appeal only to those who are "proud" of their vengeance. But the question isn't whether Caryl Chessman was guilty or not. It is whether any man's life should lie taken for eom- a fairly Death, according o all evidence we can gather, i l>ermanent condition What good does it do to kill for his crime?
