EDITORIAL comments Distant' Degrees Offered Degree mills — those small nonconformist "colleges' which refuse to believe that an education is necessary for i degree — arc back in the spotlight. Higher Education and National Affairs, a bulletin of th< American Council, on Education, has published a list of somi 36 such establishments which operate or are chartered in the United States. These "instant degree" houses often consist of one room for j nvolved. They not illegal, but are not recognized! by educational agencies. One active facility. The Church of Light, is located in California. Three other California mills — Golden State University of HoIIvw.kkI. Metropolitan University of Glen- dale and Western University of San Diego — are listed as inactive or working abroad. But one of the most interesting aspects of these degree outlets is their names. Some of the names of the scattered institutions would seemingly raise doubts in themselves. Following is a sample- College of Universal Truth. Kondora Theosophical Seminary. McKinley-Koosevelt Incorporated. College of Divine Meta¬ physics. Four Stale Cooperative University, and National University of Colorado (sometimes spelled Calorodo). In listing the degree mills, the United States Office ofj Education is putting school administrators and other in. viduals on their guard against phony degrees. But with names like that, everyone should be on guard.
