Well do I recollect the liny in the academic world when Gransmire opened its portals! What a buss there wss, what a brouhaha in faculty common rooms, what a rattling of te.-irui-, .when Dr. Agnes Thudd Sigafoos, first president of Gransmire. lifted her learned old head and announced defiantly, "We will teach the student, not the course. Instead there »:l< a broad approach to enlarging each girl's potentials, both mriitnl and physical. Take, for example, the course called B.MS. (Basic Motor Skills). B.M.S. was divided into L.D. (Lying Down), 8.U. (Standing Up) and W. (Walking). Once the student had mas¬ tered L.D. and 8.U.,she traa taught to W.-but not just to W. any old way! No, sir! She waa taught to W. with pm-"1. dignity, bearing! To inculcate a sense of balance in thc pri, she begarUicr exercises by walking with s suitcase in each hand. Again no formality was imposed.
