o State College Collegior EDITORIAL COMMENTS Capital Punishment Outmoded The Rt. Rev. James A. Pike, in a recent speech to the San Jose State College student body, listed some facts about capital punishment that are worth mentioning. Rev. Pike spoke realistically when he said: "capital punish¬ ment is just plain . . . unworthy of an enlightened society." The Reverend also said that the death penalty might be worthwhile if "some significant . . . good" was evident from These statements arc perhaps thc two best arguments for the abolition of capital punishment. Although there are still those who clamor for California' gas chamber treatment of certain criminals, thc fact is tha it doesn't correspond with an age that has rid itself of the | rack, thc "iron maiden" and other brutal instruments. Some of this clamor probably comes from those for who the death penalty provides a release for sadistic elements their personalities. It gives some a "good" feeling to be r of another "mad dog." to set an example for others. But the facts don't back up this type of thinking. THere no substantial proof that the death penalty has a deterrent effect on crime. Authorities point out that criminals seldom think of punishment when they commit a crime. We think of the brutal Leopold-Loeb murder case and last year's release of Nathan Leopold to be a library research worker. This man, convicted of murder, can now benefit mankind. It is perhaps, unfortunate in a way, that this issue of capital punishment is so closely connected with the Caryl Chessman case since the "hang Chessman" crowd has such capital punishment has a place iti this ago.
