-News -Thursday, October 8,1987 ; Peruvian retablos on campus -Page 3- By Tracy Correa StaffWriter The Phebe Conley Art Gallery will house a unique display of Peruvian retablos from Oct.ll-Nov. 7. The retablos, (originally called San Marcos after a central figure, St. Mark) were portable altars used as part of the ritual offering to the god Wawani, protector of such herd animals as sheep and cattle. The retablos on display for this particular exhibit were all created by Nicario Jimenez. Jimenez is well- known as a maker of retablos. The 30- year-old Jimenez is originally from Ayachucho, Peru, but now resides in Lima. With the help of an interpreter, Jimenez said he began making retablos at the age of 5 or 6 when he learned the art form from his father and tmeler Jimenez attended the Huamanga 'University in Ayacucho but decided to quit after two years so he could devote his time to art. The art of retablo making seems very important to Jimenez and his family. The art was passed down to him, and now he is passing it down to his own children. Jimenez said that both his children, 7-year-old Janet and 8-year-old Abilio, have both learned how to make retablos. Alejandrina, his wife of eight years, is a textile weaver but also helps make the retablos. Jimenez also has seven brothers and sisters who, although are still attending school, are also retablo makers. Looking at the retablos, the first , thing one would notice is the explicit de¬ tail and the story-telling way each one is set up, it- resembles the manger scenes we have all seen around Christ¬ mas. The retablos are shaped like boxes with double doors. The main part AD CORRECTION FOR 10/07/87 iNecesito practicar el espaHol!
