Excellent $$$ potential! Contact Regina for Details 431-6987 Fiberize with the right foods By Jill Wat Special to the Collegian I have heard that fiber can decrease my risk of getting cancer, but I have also heard that it can prevent heart disease. Which is true? Exactly, what is fiber and how much do I need? Fiber is the material in plants which is not digested by your body. It is not usually called a nutrient although it has important functions. If you do not have enough fiber in your diet, you could suffer from several diseases such as cancer, diverticulceis and heart disease. It may also help people with diabetes. Because these diseases are all so different, it might be useful to understand how fiber is thought to prevent them. Fiber helps youlase weight by making you feel full. It can prevent constipation and hemorrhoids by drawing water into the digestive tract. Fiber can prevent appendicitis and colon cancer by keeping the food in your digestive tract moving. This movement does not allow for bacterial infection or extended exposure of your digestive tract to cancer-causing agents in food. Fiber keeps the muscles of your digestive tract active so they stay, healthy. This prevents diverticulosis, a disease in which the wall of the intestine becomes weak and bulges out in places. Fatty substances are carried out of your body by fiber so your blood cholesterol level is lowered, reducing your risk of heart and artery disease. Fiber also causes a more even rise in blood sugar which is important for diabetics. y^* There are different kinds of fiber, soluble and insoluble, ana each kind has a different function. V Soluble fiber may reduce your risk for, and possibly treat, heart disease and help control diabetes. Foods containing soluble fiber are oats, dry beans, citrus fruits and apples. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to your diet, decreasing constipation and your risk of getting intestinal diseases. Wheat bran, bran or whole grain cereals, nuts' and seeds, and other fruits arid vegetables are sources of insoluble fiber. Fiber has many benefits, but too much can be harmful/Excessive amounts can cause dehydration because water is carried out of your body along with the fiber. Iron and other nutrients may not be absorbed as well because fiber moves food, along with its nutrients, out oflrour body quickly. Finally, too much fiber can decrease the amount of food you eat because it is filling. This can cause you to get too few calories and nutrients. Most Americans do not need to worry about these problems because they get only half of the amount of fiber they need in their diets. Most Americans should double the amount of fiber they are presently getting. At least 12 grams, but not more than 40 grams of dietary fiber every day is recommended. ^» If you add a variety of whole grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables to your diet, you get the fiber plus the other nutrients found in these foods. It is riot difficult to get the amount of fiber you need. Here are a few suggestions: 1) Increase the fiber in your diet slowly to avoid stomach pains and a bloated feeling. 2) Get plenty of liqud ds as you increase the fiber in your diet. Dietary fiber needs fluids to prevent constipation. 3) Eat 100 percent whole wheat bread. 4) Add bran to breads, muffins and pancakes. 5) Eat bran cereal, such as Raisin Bran, bran flakes or wheat flakes. 6) Use brown rice instead of white. 7) Use whole wheat flour in baking. 8) Eat whole fruits instead of drinking juice. and casseroles. Mix dry ingredients -Add spices and mix -Mixliquid ingredients 9) Use dried beans and peas in soups- ^ separately, then add to ^dry mixture -Add fruit and mix -Spread on two cookie sheets •Bake at 300 for 1 hr. He plopped his 6-9,210-pound frame in the back of my bicylcle carriage and away we went Through some fast talking, I became he and his girlfriend's personal caddy for the next three days. I took him everywhere, including to the park to play ball. The local paper ran a teature article on him, and I just happened to be standing next to him in the picture on page 1. HI never forget those three days, not because Magic talked to me about basketball, but because he talked to me about life. Now, understand, I was 15 years old. It was a time in my life when my Dad had two ways to do things: his way and the wrong way. Somehow, at 15,1 always did things the wrong way. It was a time when a kid thinks he knows more than people older than him, a time when you get tempted by the wrong crowd. "I don't know what I'm gonna be, but if I'm good enough, I might be able to get a pro tryout," I told Magic. 'You can't rely on that, though," he * said. 'You need that school later on." We talked more, and before he jumped out of my buggy for the last time, I wished him luck. "I hope you make rookie of the year," I said, smiling like only a girl who had a picture of Rob Lowe on her dresser could. "I'm going to win the NBA championship," he boasted. You just stay in school and keep playin' ball. And keep away from the punks at school." \ He won the NBA championship and I stayed in school, kept playing ball, and avoided the punks. He left an indelible impression on me, so eight years later, I came back to say thanks and see if he'd changed. / After I weaseled my way into the press conference at Valley Sports and the TY cameras had left, I waited until the 1 ast q uestion was asked. A few hundred kids outside began to chant, "Magic, Magic." - He had to go, but I had to talk to him. "Earvin," I said, turning from a reporter to, Joe Fan in less than a second "you probably don't remember me, but I peddled you around in Hawaii for three days back in 79." I whipped out the laminated newspaper article, showed him the picture, and waited for a response with about a thousand butterflies circling in my stomach. He looked up, smiled that same smile that everyone knows, and said somewhat surprised, You're all grown . up." I laughed and said, "I've been trying to track you down for eight years, now, but you've been so busy this was the only chance I got" I expected him to nod, say "nice to see ypu again," and take off for the* autograph seekers. Instead, he spent three minutes asking me about myself. "So you're in Fresno, now," he said. "Man, this place is basketball crazy. You still in school?" Yeah, I'm at Fresno State," Ireplied. "How long you got left?" he aaked. "This is it, I'm a senior." "What are you gonna do?" he came back with. "I'm gonna try and be a reporter, so I can cover your games," I replied. He laughed. "A reporter, huh?" You ever go back to Hawaii?" he asked. Yeah, my folks still live over there." The cheers grew louder. His PR guy * was surprised and little frustrated that Magic hadn't left for the mob yet Feeling guilty, I shook his hand and said, "it was good seeing you again," but I couldn't tell him thanks for eight years ago. I don't know why, but I just choked when the moment came. Magic walked away. He hadn't changed. Not a-$25 million contract, not a trillion kids since me, not anything would change Magic. I don't know if I will ever see Magic avain, but 111 always remember mm as probably the best thing that happened to me at that age. For a few moments Tuesday afternoon, I was 15 again. Thanks, Magic.
