The project was funded in part by the CSUF Campus Food Services. Though.it has been on the state's priority list for years, the project did not actually get under way until the Food Services decided to fund the project itself, according to Rick FirJ ay, a campus Food Services administrator. "Had we not accepted the financial burden, the project would not have gotten started last spring and the state wouldn't have given us the money," he said. "We decided we couldn't wait for the state to come up with funding." Finlay set the project in motion after witnessing the damage to the Vintage Room's ceiling which he said was caused by the highly amplified music played at the dances there. The sound vibrations could loosen, the asbestos fibers present in the ceiling material, he explained. The Food Services accepted the lowest bid for the work of scraping the asbestos from the Vintage Room's ceiling, which was also damaged from age and leaky water pipes, Finlay said. This initial work- cost $53,000, Finlay said. The state stepped in to cover this initial cost after the scope of the project was expanded by $294)00, he said.
