Baltimore) Colts. That's right, the Indianapolis Colts. I call them the Blue Bombers; not because they throw a lot of bombs, because they have a great talent for bombing out when the chips are down. As far as T know, I am the only Indianapolis Colts fan in California. I can say with honesty that I have never met another. Is there a reason for this? Actually, there are a few. Here is brief outline.' « r I. The Colts Suck That pretty much explains everything about why the Cobs haven't put a decent team on the field in die past eight years. People have laid that teams reflect the personality of their owner (if 'not their coach) and die Colts' owner is a loser. Sting Like a Bee by Ion Matsune A. Colts' owner Robert Irsay is an Al Davis without brains 1. He usually insists on lousy draft picks 2. When he makes a rare good draft pick (like John El way), he can't or v/on't sign him B. After all, they use to have Johnny Unites, Lenny Moore, John Mackey, Ted Hendricks, Bert Jones and Lydell Mitchell." Currently, the Colls have Duane Bickett, Johnny Cooks, Chris Hinton. Rohn Stark, Nesby Gasglow, Gary Hogeboom. Donne 11 Thompson. Now I'm not saying that Bickett, Cooks, Hinton and the rest of the guys aren't great players — they are. It's just that their names don't exactly make people's eyes bulge in wonderment or This year. Irsay actually tried to change dungs by drafting Alabama's Cornelius Bennett, the top collegiate hnrbacker in '86. But as the preseason winds down, Bennett (predictably) remains unsigned. I bet you're wondering how I ever came to adopt such a lousy dub as my favorite. Most of us know- that the Colts actually used to be good, but that wasn't the reason I began liking them. When I was about five years old, I was watching a football game on TV. One .team was wearing red, and the other was wearing blue. This was the cause of my agonizing mistake. Since blue was my favorite color, I chose to root for the team in blue; which as you might have predicted, was the Baltimore Colts. ■ The Colts ended up losirig that game — the Kansas City Chiefs beat them 44-24 — and. I cried my eyes out. Strangely enough, the Colts went on to win die Super Bowl that year. However, there hasn't been much for me to cheer about since that big win in 1971 and I've been crying my eyes out a lot. Maybe I'm being punished for -the stupid criterion I used to pick my favorite team. I honestly don't know. I just hope that fans don't reflect the personality of their favorite team.
