Spouts ' Tuesday, Feb. 3,1987, Page 7 Bulldogs rip Titans Ranked No.24, FSU wins 80-58 By Jon Matsune Sports Writer Fresno State Women's basketball coach Bob Spencer had to be at least a little bit concerned going into Monday night's game with Fullerton State. Just two nights earlier, his team had lost a physically and emotionally draining game to No. 5 Long Beach State; and the incoming Titans, though not nearly as powerful as the 49ers, were riding a four-game winning streak. As things turned out, there were not very many moments of anxiety for Spencer, his Bulldogs, or the South Gym crowd of 768. Yvette Roberts made sure of this as she scored 18 second-half point* and led Fresno State to what eventually became a 80-58 rout of the small, but scrappy Titans. Earlier Monday, the Bulldogs (now 16-4 overall and 8-3 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association) had achieved the highest ranking the history of Fresno State women's BARK Continued from page 6 natttapttna rutyrxaagar Bulldog guard* Ann Menke-Wilson and Fullerton State guard Stacy. That might be the very best word to describe the 'Dogs. Adams, though, must think positive, an encouraging conclusion to the season could be a confidence booster for the following season. -Yes, FSU does have a chance to be a quality team in the following seasons, but the Bulldogs' underclassmen must blossom and make the smooth transition to seasoned veterans. A strong recruiting class of prized high school prospects and tog-notch JC transfers would enhance future prosperity, also. Adams' job is hardly on the line, give the guy a few years, but if by the time Mitchell. Cole and Co. arc seniors and the 'Dogs aren't in the thick of the PCAA race. Seven points and four rebounds at halftime was a decent effort, but anybody wtey* had seen Roberts play before knew she could do more. A person who knew this better than anyone was Spencer. , T was tired mentally," said Roberts, "But Coach (Spencer) said 'don't think about it' and I just put it in the back of my mind." "Yvette is so talented ," said Martell, "When she sets her mind to it, she can get open anytime she wants." Get open is what Roberts did. As a matter of fact, the entire second half all but belonged to her. Fullerton State opened the half by outscoring the Bulldogs 6-2 and slicing the lead the lead to 40-34, but Roberts led a countercharge, scoring seven consecutive points during an 11 -0 run that increased the margin to 51-34. COACH Continued from page 6 Only Lcilani Overstreet, the women's volleyball coach, had been tabbed as a national coach of the year and Elgorriaga is now the second FSU coach to receive the honor. In his seventh season at the helm of the Bulldog soccer program, Elgorriaga earned his 100th victory at FSU. His career mark with the Dogs is 106-37-11. "There were a lot.of coaches that deserved the honor," Elgorriaga said. Fresno State received all of its scoring from Roberts, Laurie Heinrichs, Shannon- McGee and Wendy Martell. Fullerton State, meanwhile, utilized the services of 10 different players and got points from nine of them. The Titans were somewhat reminiscent of a feisty street gang. Unable to match Heinrichs' size, Roberts' athletic ability, Martell's savvy or McGee's smarts, the Titans were trying to counter quality with quantity. They were successful to a certain degree. Even though Fresno State grabbed the upper hand and broke out to 38-28 halftime lead, the Titans still had The only points Fresno State could muster during this time period came on a field goal by Roberts, her fifth of the half. An inside hoop by Roberts, two free throws by Benson, a driving score by Martell, two more free throws by Benson and the margin was still nine. Now. though, there was only 8:18 left and Fullerton State needed a run quickly. By now, Martell had come alive, and Roberts still had yet to cool down. This meant that the Bulldogs were going to be the ones to make a run. Martell, following a steal, a lay-up attempt, and a foul, hit two free throws. Roberts, after being fouled during a strong move inside, hit two free throws. Martell passed to Roberts who scored despite being intentionally fouled. Roberts hit her first free throw and missed her second; Heinrichs pulled down the rebound and put it back in the hoop.
