2-THE CCXLEGIAN Editorial: Hands off r In state and federal government, leaders often overreact when they see things in print that they don't like. It looks like student government leaders fall into the same mold. Associated StudenU President David Nlkssarian saw fit to suspend all money regarding the Collegian for almost a two-month period. Although he lifted this "suspension" Monday evening, I am appalled that a man of Nlkssarian's sUture would even consider pension. A little background is necessary. On Dec. 14, Vhe Collegian published IU usual satire issue, "The Ran- berry," or "Collusion," as it was called. Much of the material in the issue was done in poor taste; there's no question about that. The next day, Nlkssarian received a letter from five members of the Associated Student Srynnte. In the letter, the five stated that they were requesting that the Senate look Into the matter at Its next meeting, which was last Monday. The senators also requested that "appropriate action" be Uken by Nlkssarian. That "appropriate action" turned out to be an Indefinite suspension of all Collegian monies. It's bad enough when there's a threat to suspend money for one issue. But when it carries over to another semester, with entirely different people involved, I can see no way to justify that action. ' This semester's Collegian staff has a total of three holdovers from last semester. Besides myself, photo editor Joe Laspina returns as well as photographer Scott Llnnett. In spite of this, Nlkssarian threatened to malign the entire staff of this paper... a new staff. The effect of his action is more subtle than direct. As editor of The Collegian, I have to ask myself, "If he doesn't like the tone of a story, would he think about suspending the money again?" And what will the reporters think? If it affects them now, what happens if they get a job at a newspaper after leaving CSUF? Could it cause them to lose their objectivity? Even though no money was lost, the threat of cen¬ sorship definitely exists. Past years at the Collegian show that the student government leaders react very angrily when there's anything critical written about them. If we let these criticisms get in the way of our reporting, we loae our objectivity. Then we would have no credibility. No matter what may happen, I will do everything in my power to keep my objectivity, and to try to instill that objectivity in my staff. If I can do that, I don't care what anybody says, including David Nlkssarian. We are being successful in our cfforU to put out a good product.
