They will also be trying to give CSUF its first winning season since 1971, when the team was 6-4-1. Since then, the 'Dogs, tabbed a* sleeping giants by Sweeney when he csme to Fresno, have been 10-28. But Sweeney fees* the CSUF football program has Jelled since he came and it ha* a chance of being a winning program. "I believe that we can win faster than I would have at tint expected when taking over a new program," he said. "We can win. because of two key things: the attitude of the players is ex¬ cellent and the good group of recruit* brought in." '-■ Sweeney, who came from Washington State to replace JR Boone a* the head man with the Bulldogs, is now in the process of deciding who will be the winner of the. battle for the No. 1 quar- terbacking Job. The top contenders are highly recruited Dean Jones, out of Compton College, and Ron Anton. CSUF's backup QB last Jones had the early lead because of his running ability. He was ranked sixth in the state last season in total offense and was named to the Western State all- league team. Many have questioned Jones' passing ability, but Sweeney feel* confident in the 5-8 179-pound Junior. "Dean will prove that he can throw.
