—The Fresno State College Collegian BNTORLAL COMMENTS Defeat Parking Fees Don't put your tempers away yet. There's another fight going on, and all Fresno State students will be needed to cany it through. Fears of a battle last fall caused the parking fee instigat¬ ors to go underground with their project. Student protest j right now can kill the idea before it is too late. If you don't believe in student protest, look at State Sen. George Miller «and his bills to clamp down on state college j auxiliary organizations. Pressure from student groups caused Sen. Miller to reconsider his actions and withdrew his bills There is no reason why student pressure couldn't cause the parking fees plan to be withdrawn or at least reconsiderec and amended to make it fair. A faculty group is working against the plan now, and student help might deliver the knockout punch. A flood of letters protesting the fees w< attack. Legislators read their mail carefully, contrary to many thoughts on the subject. Some of the arguments that can be used against the parking fees are: 1. The extra cost the state will have to stand to ad¬ minister the fees. Collection from students and faculty of 11 state colleges call for more accountants, cashiers and policemen. Faculty members who choose can purchase re¬ served spaces for $5 a month. Otherwise they pay $3 a month like everybody else and take their chances. If a parking place will be guaranteed it probabily will be farther from class than normal. 4. The fees will benefit colleges in the metropolitan io State. FSC is not served by local bus lines as are the schooLi in the bigger cities. Also the local bus lines cannot afford to arrange an FSC line on either an hourly or half-hourly basis; nobody could afford to pay the fare either.
