The Daily Collegian Bulldogs will not be underdogs this weekend By David Coulson Daily Collegian Staff Reporter After playing the role of the underdog in their last two games, the CSUF basketball team will be expected to win Saturday at 7:35 p.m. when they host Loyola-Marymount in Selland Arena. Even though Loyola returns only one player from a 5-21 team. Bulldog head coach Boyd Crant isn't overlooking them. *l thought they'd be rebuilding,' said Crant, 'but I've been wrong about that without any question. They played Arkansas (usually the top team in the Southwest Conference) very close in Arkansas and they turned around and just about beat Oklahoma (losing 87- 82 to the Big-Eight champion).' Crant noted that the fact that Loyola is an underdog might help them the way it helped the Bulldogs against Mar¬ quette. *We have to get ready because they are capable of winning on.the road.' V. Much of the credit for the Lions' sudden toughness has to go to their first year head coach Ron Jacobs. After com¬ piling an outstanding record at El Camino Junior College, Jacobs was expected to turn around a Loyola pro¬ gram that lost four starters and to cope with the problems of having a front line that averages only 6-5 in height. Jacobs said before the season, *We are probably a recruiting year or two away from having the players needed to compete in the West Coast Athletic Conference." Loyola's strength is in the backcourt. Clyde Johnson, the Lions' only return¬ ing starter, is a 6-2 guard that gives Loyola some leadership. The senior averaged eight points per game last season. At the other guard, Dan Davis has exerted himself. Playing for Jacobs last season at El Camino, the 5-9 junior was considered to be the best point guard in the California J C system. "? Crant anticipates returning to the man-to-man defense for the Loyola game.-"For the Marquette game we thought we could stay out of foul trouble by playing a zone,' said Crant. The reason we play a zone so well is because we are very active in our man-to-man defense./ . Grant added that the Bulldogs might use some pressure type defenses if the opportunity presents itself.
