The Dairy Collegian Hosting eight schools: Matmen grapple at conference tourney CSUF wrestling coach Dick Francis is looking for his Bulldogs to put the bite on the other Pacific Coast Athletic Association schools today as the confer¬ ence tournament gets under way today at 1 p.m. at the Bulldog men's gym¬ nasium. The finals will be tonight. Five-time champion San Jose State and the new conference powerhouse, Utah State, are favorites for the team title. Utah State returns four PCAA de¬ fending champions, but Francis said he believes he has at least three who may add titles to the school, which leads the conference in individual champions. 'As a team,' Francis said, "we have three solid wrestlers in Scott Hasson (118 pounds), Hal Dillashaw (134) and Warren Flynn (150)-they can compare to anybody.' The conference competition, how¬ ever, has continued to improve. 'It's tougher than it's ever been,' Francis said, after coaching the only PCAA school that has seen every con¬ ference opponent in dual meet action this season. 'It should be an advantage for us having seen all the wrestlers- we're not going into this thing blind." Hasson will find himself in the toughest weight class of the toumev having to compete against defending champion Tracy Moore plus Rusty Lockwood, defending titlist two years ago. Hasson himself is a defending champion, winning the 126-pound division last year. Francis explained why he dropped down a notch in the "He was thinking he had a better chance to do something In the national tournament,' Francis said. 'It has made it tougher for him to win the con¬ ference tourney.' It is expected that the winners of each of the 10 weight classes will advance to the NCAA championships in Ames, Iowa March 8-10. The PCAA coaches, however, do not have to send all lOchampions.
