CAM) Garden State Bowl (1-/1-) Arizona State (8-3) vs Rutgers (9-2)-This new bowl to be played in East Rutherford, New Jersey gives Rutgers a chance to show what they can do against a legiti¬ mate major football power. The Sun Devils, following a fairly successful inaugural season in the Pac-10, should show Rutgers how lucky they have been to limit themselves to local competition. Arizona State 41, Rut- Hall of Fame Came (12/20) Texas A A M (7 3) vs Iowa State (8-3)--The Aggies had another close but no cigar season in the tough Southwestern Con¬ ference, and their outstadSpg defense should prove too much »<lowa State to handle Texas A 4 M 20, Iowa Holiday Bowl (12/22) Brigham Young (8 3) vs Navy (7-3)-Navy really had their followers excited until they demonstrated that they had feet of .lay late in the season They do have a ■ tine defensive unit, but Brigham Young is out of their league Brigham Young II Navy 10 Sun Bowl (12/23) Maryland (8-2) vs Texas (7 3)-An unusually fine matchup tor this bowl, these two teams both i rept into the top 5 nationally at various times during the season. Maryland looked overrated against Penn State, but Penn State might legitimately be one of the best teams around this sea¬ son Still, Texas should recover suffici¬ ently from their shocking loss to Baylor to nip the Terrapins in a close game. Texas 24, Maryland 21. Liberty Bowl (12/23): Missouri (7-4) vs LSU (7-3)-Another good matchup, with the exciting running of LSU's Charles Alexander the main attraction Louisi¬ ana State was very highly regarded early in the season and should prevail in another hard-fought contest. LSU 27, Missouri 24. rf (12/23): (8-3) vs North Carolina .State (B-3)-The Wolf pack is finally earning some recog¬ nition in football, and a win in this bowl would really help their recruiting. Pittsburgh players may be a little dis¬ appointed following their heartbreak loss to Penn State, but they have more thai) enough talent to prevail-here. Pittsburgh 31, North Carolina State 14 Peach Bowl (12/2S): Purdue (8-2-1) vs Ceorgia Tech (7-4)~Tbe Engineers of Pepper Rodgers came through with one of their best seasons of recent years with the popular Pepper's job on the line They will be sky-high for this game, and playing in Atlanta is not going to hurt. Purdue has a good pass¬ ing game, but will not be able to hold off the momentum Ceorgia Tech 24, Purdue 14. Fiesta Bowl (12/25) UCLA (8-3) vs Arkansas (9 2J-UCLA had high hopes of going to the Rose Bowl, and their players were bitterly disappointed when they lost to USC UCLA embar¬ rassed themselves last time they went to a non-Rose Bowl bowl game, and that pattern will repeat against a good Razorback team Arkansas 31, UCLA 17 Gator Bowl (12/29) Clemson (10-1) vs Ohio State (7-3-1) -Crusty old Woody Hayes deserves credit for getting seven wins out of a very ordinary team at Ohio State Clemson has one of their best teams ever, and playing in the Bhisbomwt Bowl (12/31): Stanford (7-4) vs Ceorgia (9-1-1)-Look for the biggest upset of the bowl games here. The Bulldogs are tough defensively, but they hgve not faced any passers like Stanford's Steve Oils. The Cardi¬ nals rise up for big games, and will surprise everyone with a decisive win here. Stanford 35. Ceorgia 17. Cotton Bowl (1/1): Notre Dame (8-3) vs Houston (8-2) -The Fighting Irish jelled late this season under Dan Devine, and after their performance against USC in Los Angeles rate as one of the top teams in the nation right now. Houston is a fine team, and will be able to keep it close because of the Texas locale of the game, but Notre Dame will win it. Notre Dame 27, Houston 17 Sugar Bowl (1/1) Penn State (11-0) vs Alabama (9-1)-ln what should be the best of the bowl games. Bear Bryant will have an opportunity to make up for what he feels was a lost chance for a national title by depriving Joe Pater- no's Nittany Lions of aff undefeated season. Penn State can win that title for the first time in their history by beating llama, but the Crimson Tide will rise up behind that vocal southern support and hand Penn State their only loss of the year. Alabama 24, Penn State 20 Orange Bowl (1/1): Nebraska (9-2) vs Oklahoma (10-1)-It's revenge time for the Sooners, whose loss to Nebraska cost them a national championship. They might still sneak in to that title with a decisive win here, but while Oklahoma will probably prevail, the Cornhuskers are too good to get swamped. Oklahoma 31, Nebraska 24. Rose Bowl (1/1): Michigan (10-1) vs Southern California (10-1) -The grand- daddy of the bowl games does not have a great show this year because Michi¬ gan does not have a great team and because Michigan seems to represent the Big 10 every year. They came to Pasadena last season touted as a super team and were thoroughly embar¬ rassed by a University of Washington team that was probably not the best in the Pac-o. After consecutive wins over UCLA and Notre Dame, USC is the best team In America right now and will have little trouble with the Wolverines. USC 31, Michigan 10 . CHRISTMAS ALREADY???
