Page 4 The Daily Collegia.. OPINION March 13,1986 Arms killed. With the thousands of hydrogen bombs in the worlds nuclear arsenals today, present and future generations of all life are threatened. Dwarfed by "weapons" (Can we still call instruments of destruction that can wipe out all life forever, just "weapons"?) that harness the unleashed power of the atom, the gallantry of the individual sold¬ ier, no matter how strong and brave, becomes secondary, if not meaningless. So impersonal, so indirect, so unrelated to strength and bravery „re the wars of machines it is as if the technologies them¬ selves have taken over and the people have only to be the victims. War has been made obsolete by technology, rendered mean¬ ingless for humans because now nuclear, war is suicidal. And so we ask the question, "What is the place of the warrior? How can we put the warriors qualities to a new use, in some way equally great and challenging?" It is senseless to waste the qualities and skills of today's warriors in practicing and perfecting the processes of annihilation. We can no longer afford to apply our individual and collective strength, cou¬ rage and ingenuity towards Forces and warrior in the traditional sense of the word, realized that the bugle* call for future warriors will be a summons to a mission to move beyond war when he said on April 16, 1953: "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is spending money alone, lt is spending sweat of its laborers, the genius of its . the hopes of its children. This U not a way of life at all in any true sense.
