' According to Stephen Benko. coordi- ' nator of classical studies, two new posi¬ tions have been approved by President Harold Haak and Judith Kuipers. Vice- President for Academic Affairs. "One will be in foreign language." said Benito, who holds a Ph.D. in history, "to teach classical Greek and Latin." He said this position was created because of the exceptionally high interest in the Theoi ic only professor by Kuipers to help plan th« changes. Dr. Wayne Colver, the toramittee chair- "beef up the languages that people inter¬ ested in the classics" must know to get jobs teaching classical studies or to enter other universities to continue their educations. "WeVe restructured the minor, but are still working out details," Colver said, "and specifying the courses students must Eventually, Colver added, the commit¬ tee would like to develop a major in classi¬ cal studies, given enough student interest. "It would be centered in the languages, with courses in history and philosophy also," Colver said. The Classical Studies program consists of courses from many different depart¬ ments, such as history, drama, foreign languages, and even, physical education. "In physical education we have history qf the Olympic Games, in political science we have ancient political thought, and in drama we have Greek drama." Benko said. "They are all pulled together into the program called classical studies." Student enrollment in the foreign Ian-" guage classes of Latin and Greek has increased, substantially in the past two years, according to Benko. This semester there are 3S students in Victor Hanson's Latin IA class and 27 students in his Greek 1A course. Enrol¬ lment figures from last semester were unavailable, but Benko said it represented about double the enrollment from two years ago. With the strengthening of admission standards for the CSU system, Colvcrsa id he is seeing the emergence of Latin classes at the high school level. "The proposed tightening of admissions standards, requiring two years of a foreign language is starting to create a demand for the reintroducing of Latin into the high school curriculum," Colversaid. Community support has been on the Pornography, vice crimes focus of sheriff lecture ing pornography turns a person into a dangerous sex fiend, said CSUF criminology professor John between people i from 8 a.m. lo4 p.m. Wednesday in Room 200 of the Main Cafeteria. Benko also pointed out the stu¬ dent organization called the Classical Society, that meets regularly for lectures, slide shows and discussions on the classics. Both Benko and Hanson have written books dealing with different aspects of Classical Studies and have received very favorable reviews. Benko has published five books, one of which was on the convention agenda of an international group, the American Aca¬ demy of Religion. Hanson has published a book entitled.
