Fred Uttle, the 'Dogs fared well enough in the prestigious 44-team Us Vegas Invitational, finishing If Little, who becomes eligible next semester, were to have participated in the meet, the team possibly could have fin¬ ished as high as seventh, since Little prob¬ ably would have had his division wrapped op. With Little gone. Dan Thomas in the 126-pound division led the Bulldog charge on the mats. Thomas, who finished second, went all the way to the finals before losing the championship match to Iowa State's Bill Kelly. Iowa Slate later went on to Thomas who won his first I a Bulldog this season, had t fora FSy wrestler since 1968, when Mike Calfego captured the national champion¬ ship in the 167-pound division and com¬ pleted the yea rat 48-1. His only loss came in mid season. Included in Thomas' impressive string of victories was a win over second-seeded Gene Spellman of Wisconsin.. Despite some strong individual perfor¬ mances. Bulldog Coach Dennos DeLiddo wasnt completely satisfied with the out¬ come. "We weren't ready for a tourna¬ ment like this yet," he said. In other invite finishes, Darren Stevens took sixth in the 118-pound class for the Dogs. Stevens' losses were to second- place finisher Doug Wyland of Michigan, fourth-place finisher Cory Baze of Okla¬ homa State and fifth-place Greg Gascon of New Mexico. Intheheavyweight.divi >n. Chris Mas was sixth for Fresno State and raised his record to 10-4 overall, with four wins in Las Vegas. Mast's three losses came against some of the nation's best, such as Iowa State's John Heroupoulu, Michigan's KirkTrost and Arizona State's Rocco Liace. Doug Carnationalsoplaced for Fresno State, finishing seventh in the 158-pound class and going 4-2 in Las Vegas. His toughest loss was to eventual champion Jimmy Johnson of Oklahoma. Johnson won 6-3. Scott Bilyeu went 3-2 in Las Vegas but didnt place for Fresno State in the 177- pound class. Neither did John O'Brien in the 190-pound division, going 0-2 and Allen Richburg went 2-2 in Vegas, but failed to place in the 150-pound class. For the 'Dogs in the 167-pound class. Wade Westbrook was 0-1, as was Alonzo Harrison of Fresno State in the 134- pound division. And Chris Salisbury went I didnt place for the 'Dogs in the 142- pound class. The FSU wrestlers go into action again on Jan. 3 when the.TJogs will be in Chico going against Simon Fraser University and HumboldtState. The next day.Fresno State competes at the Doc Petersen Open tournament, again in Chico. Fresno State then makes tracks north to Portland, to go up against Portland Slate on Jan. 7 and continues its Oregon swing with matches against Oregon State and Oregon on Jan. 9. The 'Dogs finally return home on Jan. 15, to host Stanford at 7:30 p.m. in the North Gym and continue their homestand with PCAA rival Utah State and South¬ ern Illinois University at Edwardsville on Jan. 17. On Jan. 19. the 'Dogs are at the South¬ ern California duals. Lady swimmer sets record Fresno State swimmer Kristen Turner set a new school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Invitational last weekend. Both the men's and women's swim teams participated in the meet. There was not an overall team competition. The meet was the first action lor the men's team and the first invitationaHfos- both squads. The women's team improved on nine of 14 times recorded earlier in the season. Turner's time, of 18:15.02 was the best recorded by a collegiate competitor. She placed eight overall in the event. Turner now owns all nine women's freestyle records. Turner's time bested that of 19:02 set by Cindy Raynor last year. Raynor is now a student assistant coach at Fresno State. The women's team of Laurie Walker, Tine Gri, Paige Campbell and Leslie Paull recorded a new school record in the 200- yard medley relay with a time of 1:55.36. The relay team ptaced fourth overall. Paull placed fourth in the 100-yard' freestyle with a time 53.79and was sixth in the 200-yard brcaststroke. Paull is recov¬ ering from a shoulder injury. Freshman Campbell placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25:07. Turner also placed fourth in the 200-yard individual medley, Team captain Gri also placed sixth in the 200-breaststroke. Top men's returnee Ben Lau placed second overall in the 200-yard fly with a time of 1:52.60. The time was first among collegiate competitors. La.ua.Uo finished fffth in the 100-yard fly.
