Sports P«9« 6 Nov. 14,1985 The Daily Collegian No. 34 Brian Salone toes up strong in i physical game against Club Bosnia of Yugoslavia last night in Selland Arena. Salone scored 14 points and the "Dogs won 70-61. While the latest editipn of the 'Dogj dazzled the Red Wave with an array of last breaks, slam dunks, smooth shooting and dugged defense. Coach Boyd Grant . had mixed feelings aboul the 70-61 win. "Thc only thing I can say is that we have a long way to go. "said Grant. "The thing that concerns me the most is that we're really not looking for options. We've made up our minds what we're going to do before we evn get the basketball." Thc Yugoslavians, notorious for their physically aggressive style of play, ran lefro • Bnan Sal . Fred Emerson and Jos Kuipers. Fr three big men — especially Salone and Kuipers — played hard inside, domina¬ ting thc larger Yugoslavians. Coach Grant could find little in com¬ mon between Club Bosnia's style of play and that of the teams the Bulldogs will soon be facing. "They were young." said Grant, "and you could tell they were young. I also think they were frustrated by the of¬ ficiating. The officiating, I felt, was very good." International Shootout V was played by NCAA ralherthan International rules and Club Bosnia had a difficult time adjusting to the officiating. The Yugo¬ slavian coach was infuriated by the numerous traveling calls and personal Coach Grant substituted liberally in the game, experimenting with several dif¬ ferent lineups. The starters for the game Kuipers, Emerson. Leo Walker and Mike Mitchell. Kuipers led all scorers with 25 points, hitting four-of-four three-pointers. He was also the leading rebounder with eight. Salone had an outstanding perfor¬ mance at both ends of the court. He scored 14 points, pulled down five re¬ bounds, blocked two shots and made Emerson scored 11 points, collected three boards and shot 71 percent from the field. His outside jumper looked impres- Walker handled their starting roles well, but Mitchell, according to Grant has only scratched the surface. "I've never seen him quite that tight before,"said Grant. "Mike will adjust and do the things that well all be amazed he cando." Walker. listed at 5 feet 10 inches has the potential to be a slick ballhandler as his savvy was immediately apparent. Charlie Smi , Mar I Cart . Mark Gustin. Kenny Cook and Daniel Means played aggressively and with confidence, a vital factor in this team's success. Several new Bulldogs made their first appearance in Grant's Tomb and, aside from opening game jitters, the outlook is favorable. Key n Mite that nedshirted last season, was a pleasant surprise at the point guard position. Coach Grant was pleased with Derrick Barden's performance. Barden, a redshirt freshman played aggressive defense and was a force on the boards. Senior Mark Gustin's experience and improvement were evident on the court. Gustin's contribution to the frontline will add size and depth.
