The Bulldogs will be vying once again for conference titles in two leagues this both the Pacific Coast Athletic Associa¬ tion and the Pacific Soccer Conference. Last season the 'Dogs were 14-5-3, fin¬ ishing I8th in the nation in the final poll. This season, FSU was ranked 20lh in the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America's preseason poll. In the PCAA the University of Nevada- Las Vegas should head the conference. The Runnin' Rebels are ranked 10th in the nation. In the PSC, the University of San Francisco has been tabbed as the team to Coming back for his sixth season at the helm of the Fresno State soccer program is Jose Elgorriaga. Elgorriaga, since be¬ coming head coach of the Bulldogs, has tallied a 71-27-8 mark. Returning for his Bluem. Bluem. a former standout at soccer power Hartwick College in New York, played professionally for the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Elgorriaga is confident about his team's potential. "We are looking pretty good. We have nine starters with a year's expe¬ rience. We should be better than last year." In the PSC, Elgorriaga expects to have a tough task in his chase for the title. "USF is the team to beat. This year we play them at home." Last season the Bul¬ ldogs had to travel to USF in a game that determined the PSC championship. The Dons turned back Fresno State 2-1 to win the title. USF ended its PSC season at 6-0-1, while the 'Dogs finished at 6-1. "USF has been number one in the con¬ ference for years. They have a soccer tra¬ dition,"said Elgorriaga,"but Ialsoexpect California and Stanford to be tough." In the PCAA Fresno State, UNLV.and Santa Barbara are expected to battle it out. "They (UNLV and Santa Barbara) are the top contenders." said Elgorriaga. The Fresno State schedule this season will include its tougflest competition ever. The 'Dogs will face top ranked Clemson, national champions a year ago, second rank UCLA,and number five ranked "Our schedule will provide us with a great opportunity to prove how good we are," said Elgorriaga. The Bulldogs are returning 13 players At goalie for Fresno State is senior Chato Elgorriaga, the coaches' son. Elgorriaga will continue his assault on the Bulldog record books this season. Last season he had 10 shutouts, a 0.83 goals against average, and needs 10 this season to break former FSU All-American Kirk Shermer's career mark of 22 shutouts. Elgorriaga's career goals against mark is I.I I in 36 starts, which coming into this year ties him for the best career mark in FSU history. On the back line for FSU is first team all-PSC stopper Kenny Mays. Mays, a senior, was the Bulldog's team MVP lasl season. Also returning is Ed Costello.
