9 The Daily Collegian Feature Local bars offer enticing happy hours Whether you like to party or are a serious student out for a good cheap meal, many of the bars and restaurants within walking distance of the CSUF campus offer both during Happy Hour. Happy Hour is a widespread practice in bars and restaurants across the nation, except in Massachusetts where it's illegal. Some bars offer free hors d'oeuvres or discounted drinks during the early evening when Happy Hour takes place, which can last anywhere from one to several hours. Many of the bars along Shaw Avenue participate and for under $2 you can buy a drink and eat anything from oysters on the half shell to short ribs or sandwiches and burritos. At least three are an easy walk from campus. Featuring a seafood bar that includes oysters and clams on the half shell, shrimp cocktails and fried chunks of fish, the Hungry Tiger sells draft beer for JI.75 and mixed drinks start at $2.10. The Quintos brothers, Rene, Felix and Victor man both the liquor bar and the seafood bar. Victor pours the drinks, some as large as 32 ounces for Long Island iced teas, Margaritias and daiquiris which all cost $5. Rene and Felix serve the seafood, tacos, cheeses, main entrees and fruits from four tables lined with lettuce instead of a tablecloth. Happy Hour at the Hungry Tiger lasts from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on weekdays, but Fridays are always crowded so patrons should arrive early to get a table. The food is plentiful and the drinks make for a merry evening. Stuan Anderson's Black Angus runs a close.second for extraordinary Happy Hour appetizers. Weekdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Doreen Meline serves any of the three hot entrees, salads, cheeses, meats and vegetables she is employed full-time to prepare. Draft beer is SI, well drinks are SI.25 and strawberry daiquiris and Margaritas are $1.50. Nextdoor to that is Wiliker's, which also has a 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Happy Hour. The spread includes tacos, a meat plate, cheeses, vegetables, a relish plate and chips with dip. Drinks start at the regulai price of $1.75 for draft beer, and during Happy Hour, well drinks are served as doubles for the standard price of $2.10. Just down the street is John Pardini's Greenhouse Restaurant, which during their 4 to 7 p.m. Happy Hour doubles as a very active lounge. The feast isn't as lavish but they do have some kind of hot entree and a vegetable plate with dip. Drinks are two for one, except for imported beer, coffee-based drinks and the house wine. Draft beer is $1.25, bottled beer is $1.60 and well drinks are $2. Nextdoor is the Scoreboard, which has a 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Happy Hour on weekdays. Stacia Solgard, a food waitress, said there is always one hot entree, tortilla chips and salsa, and a vegetable plate. Imported bottled beer, well drinks and "calls" — brand name liquors — all cost SI.50, bartender Pam Summerford said. The observance begins with a poetry reading program Saturday, March 2. Titled "Women's Voices: A Poetry Reading," the program will be held in the Phebe Conley Art Building. Room 101 starting at 6 p.m. Featured on thc~program will be nationally recognized women writers in¬ cluding Harryelte Mullen, winner of the Dobie-Paisana Literary Award. Also on the program will be CSUF faculty mem¬ bers Dr. Jean Pickering and Dr. Carmen Tafolla. The general theme of the day Monday, March 4 will be Women in Business. A panel discussion on the "The Nuts and Bolts of Being a Woman in Business" will- be held at noon in Room 200 of the CSUF Cafeteria Building.
