Editorial 2 The Dally Collegian Role of the press defined on campus A number of CSUF dorm residents write in today's Letters column that the story published Thursday, Feb. 21 about the dorm" resident that nearly drowned in the north gym pool, was "appal¬ ling," "disgusting," and otherwise "inexcusable." To begin with, a newspaper will come across countless pieces of information and ideas for stories — some dramatic, others not so dramatic. The drowning incident, in particular, was a dramatic breaking news story. We responded, as most newspapers would, the next day with a photo and a story. Indeed, the incident was shocking. But shocking incidents occur daily across the world and are reported in thousands of newspap¬ ers. These events are part of our existence in the world and on this campus. We can neither cover them up or ignore them. True, there is a point, in some editor's minds, where a photo is perhaps too gruesome or graphic to run. But the photo of the drowning inci¬ dent, we believe, was not "appalling" or "disgusting." Understand that we are not devoid of human feelings or emo¬ tions. We deliberated that evening and chose to run the photo and story because of its news value. And not because we wanted to offend anyone's friends or family. Our role on this campus is to report the news accurately, hon¬ estly and fairly. We believe we've accomplished that. We are not merely here to print "Personals" and report the positive things concerning this university and its students. If we did we would fail as a newspaper and as journalists.
