"Two-thirds of all campus interviews for engineers are for defense-related work..." —Bruhn Young said the initative before tbe city "forbids the manufacture, deployment and transportation of nuclear weapons in Fresno." Young and others support the measure because they believe that it not only threatens the world but it also drains money from social service programs. Two months ago they won a major victory when the Fresno City Council voted to put it on the March ballot. The senate also listened to applicants for senate positions, one of which recently came open following the resignation of Sen. Rebecca Sanchez, Post V. AS Pres¬ ident Jeff Hansen selected two candidates each for two posts and asked the s make the final judgement. Mario Huerta, voting in proxy for Sen. Richard Santana, education and human development, objected to the proceedings, however. He pointed out that AS bylaws require the president to appoint one sen¬ ator for a vacant post and submit his or her name for senate approval. Hansen and a few other senators explained that the move allowed the senate more input on who its newest members would be, but Huerta insisted that the matter be referred to the Legal and Legislative committee. Greg Barfield, president of the Pan- African Union, was also critical of the senate yesterday. He said that when the PAU make a mistake in a funding request last week they got "jumped on." He also noted that various senators were "at each other's throats. Students feel alienated when they see you attacking each other." Not long after that. Sen. Mark Richey said someone in the AS office was stealing paper - eight reams-worth so far - from the AS office.
