Louis Gossett Jr (pictured) woo an Emmy Award d
year ago for his role a_ Fiddler in Roots Since then
he's been so busy, he's had little time to count his
money or dust  his Emmy
One of the many roles portrayed by Gossett since
Roots' is that of Lem Harper a black rights activist who
unleashes a scandal involving stolen federal health funds
and high-ranking government officials, in The Critical
List,' a four-hour motion picture for NBC-TV starring
Lloyd Bridges. Monday and Tuesday. Sept 11 and 12
Gossett is featured in the Tuesday haft of the film
Since Roots.' Gossett has done two theatrical films
('The Deep' and The Choirboys'), five television films
('To Kill a Cop. lawman Without a Gun.' The Critical
List. Backstairs at the White House and Roots—A
Year Ago Today) and a television special Ben
Vereen—His Roots')
He plays a trustee in Bru baker, a prison reform film
currently in production And in February, he begins his
first job as director with Stomping at the Savoy.' a

I don't have any spare time anymore, he said "I
used to fish, swing in my hammock, read scripts
leisurely AJl that's gone now But I'm not complaining
The jobs have more value than they used to and the
pay is better
Gossett knows the pay is better but he says he s
not greatly concerned with finances "The money will
come." he keeps insisting My agents and lawyers will
see to that I just work and consider new projects."

Louis Gossett Jr has come a long way since 1953
when he played his first part, a boy with growing pains
in the play Take a Giant Step " He was still in high school
in Brooklyn and shortly thereafter, he was working
rather frequently on the New York stage
"Sidney (Poitier) got ail the films and I got all the
Cm.'* he said. 'There didn't seem to be anybody else
n, after 15 years in the theatre, I came to Hollywood
and somebody said. What have you done ?' After reciting
my credits for about 20 minutes, I got 15 lines in
Cowboy in Africa.'
Holly-wood was really hard to break into, an uphill
battle. I've been iscovered so many times, I've lost
count" ne said "But I'm doing okay right now. If rt
subsides, I will have made the most of it. As for the
Mure, up ahead is something. I'm not sure what."

The Multi-Cultural Coordinating
Council for Children and Families
will sponser its first state-wide training conference on Child Abuse and
Neglect from*a multi-cultural perspective to be held on Oct. 4 through
6 at the Woodlake Inn, Sacramento,
California.
The training conference will be
specifically designed to address
issues encountered by minority professionals working in the field of
child abuse and neglect. It will provide a means to share information,
problem solve, develop recommendations, obtain better resources and
increase cultural awareness.
Workshops will be held from cultural pbints of view, in the areas of
physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, changing family patterns, child
rearing, and more.
