Perhaps becauae.lt was the sixth establishment that we visited Monday night, or perhaps because It was Monday night, our visit to The Lounge was not uplifting. But to be confronted with the spectacle of an aging agricultural gentlemen In a polka-dot body shirt and polyester pants engaged both in an obscene grind with his partner and a personal effort not to let his Tailor Topper" slide off right there on the illuminated dance floor—while a few benumbed and Isolated patrons blew smoke lings vacantly at the celling— was to be confronted with more ambience than we could manage. /tm's Place Jim's Place Hall. Jim's Place ain't nothln' but a good old honky tonk! They gotcher music ever' naght and on Wenzys from four of the p.m. until closln' all the hooch from the "well" (you know, them fountain guns n' beerpull things) don't cost a man but four bits! How much Is that, you say? Seriously. It's a good bar—nothing If not spirited, from the saucy shouting up and down the bar to the 70's NashvlUe Country and Western music which Infuses the place with a tinny, agresslve ebullience wholly appropriate to the estabUahment. And It Is the place to be during the Ckjvls Rodeo, or. more precisely, after the days' events of the Clovls Kodeo. Then the place Is a wild crush of people a-stompln' and a-holleiin'. full of piss and vinegar and come to raise hell. The Upstart Crow I admit that before the management of die bookstore/restaurant The Upstart Crow bought me a cup of tea. I was toying with sentences like, "the Crow somehow succeeds In making Fresno appear more provincial than It Is." After the tea I realized that 1 was actually referring to Woody Laughnan. The Crow boasts the best con- verstlonallsts tn Fresno, rare combinations of "nostalgic de la boue" and the creative urge, certified by over 50 rejection slips from major publishing companies (under 50's are detained at Marie Calendar's). The Crow may be a trifle selfconsciously piquant but It offers unusual coffees, a broad selection of books and interesting conversation. If that weren't enough to tip the scales, then the Crow Is worth a visit If only because it oners succor to those delightful pariahs of Fresno cafedom. the chessplayers. Folly's Pool cutting loose at the Wild Blue The Casino The clientele enjoy a cup of coffee at the Upstart Crow and Co. The Casino The Casino may be the most professional and together disco in Fresno. Co-ordinated by Tony Ungaro. veteran Disc Jockey and self proclaimed "31 year-old hippie". The Casino Is a well- thought out bumporeum. The walls are themattcaUy covered with green felt patterns of Las Vegas gaming tables, mirrors and lights. The vapor from dry ice rolls across the dance floor. It's relatively busy every night. Wild Blue Yonder The Yonder la that building In the Tower District that elicits the odor of burnt rope. Here music Is played In order to be listened to and appreciated by the audience, which Is ranged at tables around the small stage. There's room for good, uninhibited dancing off to the side of the stage but the emphasis is on creative music, not disco gunk. Occasionally a chap or two In this place looks and acts as If stunned by a mind ray but not to worry; the Yonder has an exceptionally benign character. But then the Y'onder would have to be accommodating, hosting as it does a wide spectnim of Jazz, rock, country and folk music, as well as several unique mixtures thereof. They even liave belly dancing on Wednesdays. Feed and Fuef Feed and Fuel has peanut shells all over the floor and a high volume live disco/top 40 band. The peanut shells are from the baskets of unsheDed peanuts which the bartenders dispense. The noise level, remarkably enough, seems to Impede no converstlon although considerably more effort must be made here In order to have one. Most people seem very eager to socialize and dance. The Breakers The Breakers occupies a mid- ground between the college crowd and the mld-30's businessmen, and as such it has appeal for both The people aged In their late 20 s. who compromise the majority of the clientele here, make for a mellow mature and very sociable group. This business oriented, well- mannered crowd comes to listen to a. popular, easy listening vein of Jazz and rock And yes. there Is daw trig, but the place Is no disco. Not yet. anyway. In a month, however, the Breakers goes rltsco There will be specials on the drinks every night The management Is say lng It will be, "a low-key disco that the otders can enjoy." It wlO be Interesting to see a "low- key disco." »*•*«•• II _____________
