2-The Daily Collegian Review December 3,1984 Cosby succeeds where others fail Just when you thought NBC was sunk, the network manages to hook a rare fish: a fresh idea. This proverbial "fish out of water" is The Cosby Show, a half-hour sitcom that seems to break NBC's standard program¬ ming procedure. There are no stock foot¬ age car chases, no degrading "jiggle jokes," and the members ofthe show's black fam¬ ily are depicted as ordinary people. Receiving lop billing is, of course. Bill Cosby, who shares the soundstage with Phylicia Ayers-Allen. Respectively, they play Dr. Cliff Huxtableand his wife Clair, the parents of five typical offspring (four of whom still live al home). The simple situation is all Cosby needs to display the wry humor that has carried him through three previous^eleviilon -efforts. ^~{ Cosby's parental humor seems toWrk best with daughters Denise (Lisa Bonet) and Rudy (Keshia Knight Pulliam). Any¬ one with children (since Cosby himself has declared that having only one child doesn't qualify you as a parent) can certainly iden¬ tify with the tribulations of Cliff as he inadvertantly asks Denise "how ugly" her date is, with him standing only a few feet On the other end of the age scale is Rudy, one of the few cute children on television who is actually cute. There's a lot to be said for a very young actress who can provide a great deal of humor and still not upstage the adults. The Cosby Show succeeds on almost every level of good sitcom-making. For starters, it's refreshing to see a comedy Take a Load _ Off Your Back! ^JSED BOOK BUYBACK DECEMBER 12 TO 21 EL BOOKSTORE that has a predominantly minority cast that doesnt insult our intelligence by pointing it out through an endless stream of ethnic one-liners. Good Times was guilty of this practice, and 77te Jeffersons has been doing it for over ten seasons now. In addition, family life as shown on Cosby is about as realistic as the electronic media can allow without losing its enter¬ tainment value. Put simply, the parents act like parents, and the kids act like kids. There is no role reversal, no children tell¬ ing their folks that their disciplinary actions contradict thc kids'beliefs, an irri¬ tating plot device that has made everyone want to reach into the TV set and spank the little brats* behinds. Yet, at the same time, there is a believable mutual love and respect between the family members. Finally, Cosby succeeds where a lot of viewers thought it would probably fail. Although he is the glue that holds the show together, Cosby does not supply all of the humor on the show. True, he is responsible for a great deal of the laughs.
