2-The Daily Collegian Humor December 6,1984 Car crises create constant havoc Of all the things my mother taught n while I was growing up. she never onr, mentioned car trouble. No, Mom left rr alone to figure out what to do when the N jalopy doesnt want to get up and go. learned all about d ling v sol II >tby s programmed u believe that we don't need to worry about fixing thc carburetor — that's why we have boyfriends. And brothers. And fathers. And other assorted male friends and relatives. Perhaps part of the problem with my car is that I bought it from a wrecking yard. I reali7e now that this should have harmonious relationship I would share with my Mercury Capri, but being thc my mind. Besides, it was cheap. and it hasnt left yet. In the last year IVe had installed two mufflers, two alterna¬ tors, two fan belts, a timing belt, two accelerator cables and had three lunc-ups. Not to mention a headache. I've averaged at least one tow per month since Sept. 23, 1983. Three times I was towed by the same guy. Talk about suffered when the Triple A man laughs and says "you mean you havent gotten rid of this heap yet?" Shut up and tow, 1 mumble. Riding in a tow truck is a bad enough experience without having the serviceman making snide remarks. And another thing, why is il that everyone must stare at you when you're riding in a tow truck? Why can't they mind their own business? The last truck was the worst. This baby The pedal was stuck to the floor — and 1 couldnt unstick.it. Pictures of my childhood flashed before With both feet on the brake, 1 eased the car off the highway and pulled into the nearest Chevron station. 1 shoved the gear sclecter into park and shut off the car. There I was, heart racing, stranded at Belmont and 99 with two 16-year-old gas station attendants and a can of WD-40. 1 think that was tow number eleven. The one thing I've discovered about get¬ ting my car fixed is that when all else fails: cry. Once, Triple A towed my c iePep Boys, and the driver made it quite clear that if by some chance Manny, Moe and Jack couldnt do the job, 1 was out of luck. Triple A couldnt tow me again. The "boys" then proceeded to let mc know that "we cant do that kinda work here. It aint our policy." My face fell, my upper lip quivered, my eyes welled wilh tears that spilled over onto my cheeks. Two hours and $47.38 later, 1 drove my Dont get me wrong, I didnt try to cry. In fact. 1 had every intention of being as strong as an ox. I've even had my share of scary ex¬ periences. Four weeks ago I was driving up 99 when 1 glanced at my speedometer and saw 1 was tooling along at 80 mph. "Slightly over the speed limit. I'd better slow down," I thought to myself. But when I released the pressure on the gas pedal. 1 went faster. The Bulldogs led through seven matches but failed to score in the remaining three, while OSU tallied 11 points in the same span. "We had a chance to beat "em and we didnt," said Bulldog coach Dennis De¬ Liddo. "I'm happy, but we had them on the ropes. WeVe just got to work harder." Oklahoma State coach Joe Seay had nothing but praise for the Bulldogs, whom his team beat 45-2 last year. "Fresno State has a tough team and a fine coach," said Seay. "They come out and wrestle and dont stall. I think hell (DeLiddo) have a great team by the end of the year. There's a lot of potential." The anticipated big match in the 118- pound category between Fresno State's Pablo Saenz, ranked third in the nation and OSU's number one-ranked Mark Perry failed to materialize. Perry did not make the trip because of conflicts with a final exam. Oklahoma State forfeited the match, giving Fresno State a quick 6-0 lead. Saenz moved up to the 126-pound class, beating Brian Stevens 7-3 and openingHhe Bulldogs' lead to 9-0. In thc 134-pound class, OSU's John Smith, ranked third, took a 8-4 win in an aggressive match over Fresno State's Joe Ismay, ranked 10th. With the win, the Cowboys closed the lead to 9-3.
